Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview
- The Government of Bihar launched the Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana to provide a subsidy on per-unit electricity charges to consumers across the state.
- Later, on 18 July 2025, the Bihar Cabinet approved an expansion of the scheme, announcing free electricity for domestic households up to 125 units per month.
- The scheme is being implemented by Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL).
- Under this initiative, domestic electricity connection holders in Bihar are now entitled to 125 units of electricity every month at zero cost.
- Consumers are not required to pay any electricity charges if their monthly usage remains within the 125-unit limit.
- The scheme's benefit also covers energy charges, electricity duty, and fixed charges included in the electricity bill.
- Both rural and urban households having a valid domestic electricity connection are eligible to receive free electricity up to 125 units under the Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana.
- If a consumer's electricity usage exceeds 125 units in any month, payment will be required only for the additional units consumed, at subsidised rates.
- The Bihar Government is also motivating beneficiaries to install rooftop solar power systems within the next three years.
- For this purpose, residents can apply under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, where the Central Government provides a subsidy of up to Rs. 78,000 for rooftop solar installation.
- As per government estimates, around 1 crore 89 lakh families are currently benefiting from free electricity up to 125 units every month under this scheme.
- For the financial year 2025-26, the Bihar Government has allocated Rs. 15,995 crore to ensure smooth and effective implementation of the scheme.
- There is no separate application process required to avail the benefits of the Bihar Government's free electricity scheme.
- All eligible consumers are automatically covered, provided their monthly electricity consumption does not exceed 125 units.
- For any queries or assistance related to the Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana, beneficiaries may visit the nearest electricity department office or contact the helpline number 1912.
