Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Chhattisgarh Mukhyamantri Dharohar Darshan Yojana is a flagship cultural heritage initiative of the Culture Department, Government of Chhattisgarh, designed to reconnect the younger generation with the state's rich historical, archaeological, and cultural legacy. Announced in the state budget for 2023-24, the scheme addresses a growing concern: as modernization accelerates, many students have limited direct exposure to the ancient monuments, protected archaeological sites, museums, forts, temples, and other heritage locations that define Chhattisgarh's identity. By organizing structured educational visits, the programme aims to build lasting awareness about the need to preserve these treasures while fostering pride and a deeper understanding of the state's past.

Under the scheme, students from government and aided (grant-receiving) schools and colleges across Chhattisgarh are taken on guided heritage tours. These visits are carefully curated so that participants receive detailed insights into the historical significance, architectural features, and cultural traditions linked to each site. Trained Dharohar Mitras (Heritage Guides), appointed at state-protected monuments, accompany the groups and explain the stories behind the structures, turning ordinary excursions into meaningful learning experiences.

The initiative is implemented through selected educational institutions, with a district-level committee chaired by the District Collector choosing eligible schools and colleges every year- typically three institutions from each district. The government provides financial assistance to the selected institutions (including a grant of ₹10,000 for organising the tour) along with support for the participating students, ensuring that the visits remain accessible and well-supported.

Beyond classroom learning, the Mukhyamantri Dharohar Darshan Scheme serves a broader purpose. It encourages heritage conservation by making young people active stakeholders in protecting their cultural inheritance and promotes responsible tourism by teaching students to engage thoughtfully with historical sites. Nodal responsibility rests with the Directorate of Archaeology, Archives and Museums in Raipur, which works under the Culture Department to coordinate the programme statewide. In essence, the scheme is both an educational tool and a long-term investment in cultural continuity - helping students move from passive awareness to informed appreciation of Chhattisgarh's enduring heritage.
