Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

Every year, lakhs of school and college students across Tamil Nadu receive free bus passes, making the scheme one of the state's most significant educational support programs.

Along with the Free Bus Pass Scheme for Students, the state also operates the Zero Ticket Bus Travel Scheme, which allows eligible women, transgender persons, and persons with disabilities to travel free of cost on designated government bus services. Through these initiatives, the government aims to reduce transportation expenses for students and other beneficiaries while promoting inclusive and affordable mobility across Tamil Nadu.

The free bus pass allows eligible students to travel from their residence to their school, college, polytechnic, or ITI and return home without paying bus fare. The concession is available on Ordinary, Express, and Deluxe services operated by State Transport Corporations, while AC services and Night Services are excluded from the scheme.

The Transport Department and State Transport Corporations implement the scheme in coordination with educational institutions. Steps to Apply

• Students should contact their respective school, college, ITI, or polytechnic institution to obtain the Free Bus Pass application form.
• The application form may be obtained through the educational institution or from the concerned Transport Corporation website.
• The student should carefully fill in all required details, including name, class/course, residential address, educational institution details, and the nearest boarding and destination bus stops.
• The applicant must attach the required documents and recent passport-size photographs as prescribed by the institution.
• The school or college authorities will verify the student's enrollment details and certify the application before forwarding it to the Transport Department or the concerned State Transport Corporation.
• Educational institutions are also required to prepare and submit student details in the prescribed digital format along with the physical applications for processing.
• Under the online bus pass issuance system, officials from the Transport Corporation may visit schools, colleges, ITIs, and polytechnic institutions to capture student photographs and complete the pass generation process.
• The Transport Corporation verifies the submitted details and prepares the student bus passes.
• After printing and lamination, the completed bus passes are delivered to the respective educational institutions.
• Students can collect their Free Bus Pass from their school, college, ITI, or polytechnic institution and use it for travel between their residence and educational institution.
• Bus passes are generally issued between 15 June and 30 November each year, and the pass remains valid up to 30 April of the academic year.

Important Instructions for Students

• Ensure that the residential address is entered correctly, including door number, street name, locality, city, and PIN code.
• Select the nearest boarding bus stop from the residence and the nearest bus stop to the educational institution.
• Submit clear photographs in the prescribed format.
• Verify all details before submission to avoid delays in bus pass issuance.
• Students should collect the bus pass only through their educational institution after approval and distribution by the Transport Corporation.

Bus Pass Validity Period

• Applications are generally processed from 15 June to 30 November every year.
• The validity period of the student bus pass is from 15 June to 30 April.
• The pass can be used throughout the validity period for eligible travel.
