Scheme Introduction: A Brief Introduction

Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) is a life insurance scheme launched by the Government of India on 9 May 2015 to provide financial security to families in the event of the death of an earning member. The scheme is administered by the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance and is implemented through participating banks, post offices, the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), and other approved life insurance companies.

The primary objective of PMJJBY is to increase access to affordable life insurance among citizens who may not have adequate financial protection. The scheme is particularly beneficial for low-income households, workers in the unorganized sector, small farmers, and individuals who do not have access to traditional insurance products. By offering insurance coverage at a nominal annual premium, the government aims to strengthen social security and reduce the financial burden on families after the loss of a breadwinner.

Under the scheme, an insurance benefit of Rs. 2 lakh is payable to the nominee upon the death of the insured member, irrespective of the cause of death. Whether the death occurs due to illness, natural causes, or an accident, the nominee remains eligible to receive the insured amount subject to the terms and conditions of the scheme. This feature makes PMJJBY one of the most accessible life insurance initiatives available to the general public.

The insurance cover remains valid for a period of one year from 1 June to 31 May and can be renewed every year through the auto-debit facility linked to the subscriber's savings bank account or post office account. Individuals between 18 and 50 years of age can enrol in the scheme. Once enrolled, subscribers can continue renewing their coverage up to the age of 55 years, provided the premium is paid regularly and other eligibility conditions are fulfilled.

Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana forms an important part of the Government of India's social security framework. Since its launch, the scheme has helped extend insurance coverage to millions of citizens across rural and urban areas. Its simple enrolment process, affordable premium, and assured life cover have made it one of the most popular insurance schemes available through banks and post offices in India.

Citizens interested in securing financial protection for their families can enrol in PMJJBY through their participating bank or post office. Individuals looking for more comprehensive social security coverage can also subscribe to Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), a government-backed accident insurance scheme that provides financial assistance in case of accidental death or disability. Since both schemes are available at a highly affordable premium, many subscribers choose to enrol in PMJJBY for life insurance coverage and PMSBY for accident insurance benefits, thereby ensuring broader financial protection for themselves and their families.

The PMJJBY premium is generally deducted once every year during the renewal cycle to ensure uninterrupted insurance coverage.

  • Policyholders can continue renewing their PMJJBY coverage every year up to the eligible age limit, subject to compliance with scheme guidelines.
  • Subscribers joining after the annual renewal period may be required to pay the applicable pro-rata premium as prescribed under the scheme.

What if PMJJBY Premium is Deducted from Multiple Accounts?

Individuals who maintain more than one savings bank account or post office account should note that PMJJBY benefits can be availed through only one account. The scheme does not permit multiple insurance covers for the same individual.

  • Any duplicate premium collected for additional enrolments may be forfeited as per scheme rules.
  • Subscribers should ensure that they remain enrolled through a single designated account to avoid complications during claim settlement.
  • The Aadhaar-linked account used for enrolment should be maintained properly for smooth administration of the scheme.
