Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) is a Central Sector Scheme launched by the Government of India in February 2019 to provide financial assistance to eligible landholding farmer families across the country. The scheme aims to supplement the financial needs of farmers for agricultural activities, procurement of inputs, crop cultivation, and other household requirements. Under PM-KISAN, eligible beneficiaries receive income support directly from the Central Government through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, ensuring that the assistance reaches farmers without the involvement of intermediaries.

Under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, eligible farmer families receive financial assistance of ₹6,000 per year. The assistance is released in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 each during a financial year and is credited directly into the Aadhaar-seeded bank account of the beneficiary. The scheme was initially launched for Small and Marginal Farmer families and was later expanded to cover all eligible landholding farmer families irrespective of the size of their landholding. The scheme covers eligible landholding farmer families having cultivable land recorded in the land records of the concerned State or Union Territory. The financial support provided under PM-KISAN helps farmers manage cultivation expenses and meet various agricultural and domestic needs throughout the year.

To receive benefits under the scheme, farmers must satisfy the prescribed eligibility conditions and ensure that their land ownership details are correctly reflected in the official land records. Certain categories of persons, including institutional landholders, income taxpayers, serving or retired government officers, high-value pensioners, and specified professionals, are excluded from the scheme benefits. The Government also requires beneficiaries to complete Aadhaar-based e-KYC to continue receiving PM-KISAN instalments in their bank accounts.

Since its launch, PM-KISAN has become one of the largest farmer welfare schemes in India, benefiting more than 9 crore farmers across the country through direct income support. In view of its positive impact, the Union Cabinet, on 31 July 2026, approved the continuation of the PM-KISAN Scheme for the period 2026-27 to 2030-31 with a total financial outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore. The annual financial assistance under the scheme continues to remain ₹6,000 per eligible farmer family, payable in three equal instalments. Eligible farmers can apply through the official PM-KISAN Portal or their nearest Common Service Centre (CSC). Additionally, to protect their crops against losses caused by natural calamities, pests, and diseases, farmers may also consider enrolling under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), another major farmer welfare scheme of the Government of India.

Scheme Benefits

• Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Scheme, eligible landholding farmer families receive financial assistance from the Government of India.
• A financial benefit of ₹6,000 per year is provided to each eligible farmer family.
• The annual assistance is released in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 each.
• The instalments are generally released every four months during the following periods:
  • April to July
  • August to November
  • December to March
• The financial assistance is transferred directly into the beneficiary's bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
• The assistance helps farmers meet expenses related to agricultural inputs, crop cultivation, and other household needs.
• The scheme provides assured income support to eligible farmer families across the country, subject to fulfilment of the prescribed eligibility conditions.
• The government has extended the scheme for the next 5 years from 2026-27 to 2030-31 with a financial outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore, ensuring continued financial support to eligible farmers.

Eligibility Requirements

Farmers must satisfy the eligibility conditions prescribed under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Scheme to receive financial assistance. The scheme is primarily intended for eligible landholding farmer families having cultivable land recorded in their names. However, certain categories of individuals and farmer families are excluded from receiving benefits under the scheme as per the Government guidelines.

Who is Eligible?

• All landholding farmer families having cultivable land recorded in the land records of the concerned State or Union Territory are eligible to receive benefits under the PM-KISAN Scheme.
• For the purpose of the scheme, a farmer family means a family comprising husband, wife, and minor children who own cultivable land as per the land records of the concerned State or Union Territory.
• The scheme covers eligible landholding farmer families irrespective of the size of their landholding.
• The benefit is provided subject to verification of land records and fulfilment of all prescribed scheme conditions.
• In cases of inheritance due to the death of a landowner, eligible successor families may continue to receive benefits subject to verification of land records and fulfilment of the scheme guidelines.

Who is Not Eligible?

• All institutional landholders.
• Former and present holders of constitutional posts.
• Former and present Ministers, State Ministers, Members of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, and State Legislative Councils.
• Former and present Mayors of Municipal Corporations and Chairpersons of District Panchayats.
• Serving or retired officers and employees of Central Government or State Government Ministries, Departments, Offices, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), Autonomous Bodies, and Local Bodies.
• Multi Tasking Staff (MTS), Class IV, and Group D employees are exempted from the above government employee exclusion criteria.
• Retired pensioners receiving a monthly pension of ₹10,000 or more, except MTS, Class IV, and Group D pensioners.
• Persons who paid Income Tax in the previous assessment year.
• Professionals such as Doctors, Engineers, Lawyers, Chartered Accountants, and Architects who are registered with professional bodies and are engaged in professional practice.
• Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
• Tenant farmers and cultivators who do not have cultivable land recorded in their own name.
• Farmers cultivating land that is recorded in the name of their father, forefathers, or any other family member unless the ownership has been legally transferred in their own name.

Required Documents

• The applicant may be required to provide the following documents and details while registering under PM-KISAN:
• Aadhaar Card.
• Aadhaar-linked mobile number for OTP verification and e-KYC.
• Bank Account Number.
• IFSC Code of the bank account.
• Land ownership records as maintained by the concerned State/UT.
• Address details.
• Mobile Number.
• Category details (SC/ST/Others), if applicable.
• Date of Birth/Age.
• Farm Size (in hectares).
• Survey Number / Khata Number, if applicable.
• Khasra Number, if applicable.
• In areas where Aadhaar is not available, alternate identity documents such as Voter ID Card, Driving Licence, NREGA Job Card, or any other government-issued identity proof may be accepted as per applicable guidelines.

Steps to Apply

• Eligible farmers can apply for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Scheme either online through the official PM-KISAN portal or by visiting their nearest Common Service Centre (CSC).

Online Registration through PM-KISAN Portal

• Eligible farmers can apply online for the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana through the official PM-KISAN Portal.
• Visit the PM-KISAN website and click on the "New Farmer Registration" option available on the homepage.
• Enter your Aadhaar Number, mobile number, and select the State from the dropdown list.
• Complete the OTP-based verification process to proceed with the PM-KISAN registration form.
• Select whether you are registering as a Rural Farmer or an Urban Farmer.
• Fill in the required details in the application form, including:
  • Farmer's Name
  • Father's Name
  • Gender and Category
  • Address Details
  • Mobile Number
  • Bank Account Number and IFSC Code
  • Date of Birth
  • Landholding Details
  • Farm Size
  • Survey Number / Khasra Number (where applicable)
• Review all the information entered in the PM-KISAN application form and submit the registration request.
• After successful submission, a registration reference number will be generated for future tracking.
• The application will be verified by the concerned authorities based on land records and eligibility conditions prescribed under the scheme.
• Upon successful verification and approval, eligible farmers will receive PM-KISAN instalments directly into their bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

Registration through CSC Centres

• Farmers who are unable to complete the PM Kisan online registration process themselves can apply through their nearest Common Service Centre (CSC).
• Visit the nearest CSC Centre along with Aadhaar details, bank account information, mobile number, and land-related details required for registration.
• The Village Level Entrepreneur (VLE) at the CSC Centre will enter the farmer's details on the PM-KISAN Portal and complete the registration process.
• Farmers should carefully verify the information entered before submission of the PM-KISAN application.
• CSC Centres may charge the prescribed service fee for registration and related services.
• After submission, the PM-KISAN application will be forwarded to the concerned authorities for verification of land records and eligibility conditions.
• Upon successful verification and approval, the farmer will be enrolled under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.
• Eligible beneficiaries will receive PM-KISAN instalments directly into their bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

PM Kisan e-KYC Process

• Beneficiaries of the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana are required to complete e-KYC to continue receiving PM-KISAN instalments in their Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts.
• The Government has provided three methods for completing PM Kisan e-KYC:
  • OTP-Based e-KYC through the PM-KISAN Portal and Mobile App.
  • Biometric e-KYC through Common Service Centres (CSCs) and State Seva Kendras (SSKs).
  • Face Authentication e-KYC through the PM-KISAN Mobile App.

OTP-Based PM Kisan e-KYC

• Visit the PM-KISAN Portal.
• Click on the "e-KYC" option available on the homepage.
• Enter your Aadhaar Number.
• Submit the OTP received on the mobile number linked with Aadhaar.
• Upon successful verification, the PM Kisan e-KYC process will be completed.

Biometric e-KYC through CSC Centres

• Visit your nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) or State Seva Kendra (SSK).
• Carry your Aadhaar Card and Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
• The CSC/SSK operator will complete the biometric authentication process using Aadhaar-based verification.
• After successful authentication, your PM Kisan e-KYC will be completed.
• A nominal service fee may be charged as per the prescribed guidelines.

Face Authentication e-KYC through Mobile App

• Download the PM-KISAN Mobile App and Aadhaar Face RD App from the Google Play Store.
• Log in using your PM-KISAN-registered mobile number.
• Open the Beneficiary Status page.
• If the e-KYC status shows "No", select the e-KYC option.
• Enter your Aadhaar Number and provide consent for face authentication.
• Complete the face scan as instructed on the screen.
• After successful face authentication, the e-KYC process will be completed.

Note: The e-KYC status is generally updated within 24 hours of successful verification. Farmers can check their e-KYC status and beneficiary details through the Know Your Status (KYS) facility available on the PM-KISAN Portal or through the Kisan eMitra service.

PM Kisan Farmer ID

PM-KISAN beneficiaries are advised to generate their Farmer ID through the Farmer Registry Portal of their respective State or Union Territory. The Farmer ID serves as a unique digital identity for farmers and helps in the verification of farmer records for agriculture-related schemes and services. Creating a Farmer ID and keeping the details updated may help beneficiaries avoid issues related to verification and facilitate seamless access to government benefits in the future.

Farmer ID Registration for PM-KISAN Beneficiaries

• Visit the Farmer Registry Portal of your respective State or Union Territory.
• Select the option for Farmer Registration or Create Farmer ID.
• Enter your Aadhaar Number and complete the OTP-based verification process.
• Provide the required personal details, address information, and mobile number.
• Enter the details of your agricultural land as available in the official land records.
• Verify the information displayed on the screen and submit the registration request.
• After successful verification, a unique Farmer ID will be generated.

Note: Each State and Union Territory operates its own Farmer Registry Portal. PM-KISAN beneficiaries should create their Farmer ID through the designated portal of their respective State and ensure that their Aadhaar, mobile number, and land records are updated.

PM Kisan Grievance and Query Submission

Beneficiaries facing issues related to PM-KISAN registration, instalment payment, e-KYC, Aadhaar verification, beneficiary status, or other scheme-related matters can submit their grievances online through the PM-KISAN Portal.

• Visit the official PM-KISAN Portal.
• Select the "Help Desk- Query Form" option available on the portal.
• Enter the required details such as Registration Number, Aadhaar Number, Account Number, or Mobile Number.
• Provide the details of your grievance or query in the prescribed format.
• Review the information and submit the request.
• After successful submission, a reference number may be generated for future tracking.
• Beneficiaries can use the reference details to follow up on the status of their grievance, if applicable.

Note: Farmers should keep their Registration Number, Aadhaar details, and other relevant information readily available while submitting a grievance to facilitate quicker resolution of their query.

PM-KISAN Scheme Extended Till 2030-31

The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Scheme for five years from FY 2026-27 to FY 2030-31. A total financial outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore has been sanctioned for this period.

The continuation of the scheme ensures that eligible landholding farmer families will continue receiving ₹6,000 per year through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The financial assistance will continue to be released in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 each, subject to fulfilment of the prescribed eligibility conditions.

According to the Government, PM-KISAN has emerged as one of India's largest DBT-based farmer welfare schemes and has helped farmers invest in seeds, fertilisers, irrigation, farm machinery, and other agricultural requirements while strengthening rural livelihoods.
