Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Madhya Pradesh Gopal Protsahan Yojana is a livestock reward scheme of the Madhya Pradesh Animal Husbandry Department (Pashupalan Vibhag). Its stated objective is to promote the rearing of Indian improved-breed (indigenous) cattle and to encourage higher milk production by recognising and rewarding the owners of the best milk-producing animals. In simple terms, it is the government's way of saying to cattle keepers: if you look after good native cows and get more milk out of them, your effort will be noticed and rewarded.

Rather than handing out a flat subsidy that everyone receives equally, the scheme is designed as a competition. The highest milk-yielding indigenous cows are entered and judged through competitions held at three levels - the development block, the district, and finally the state. An animal that wins at one level advances to compete at the next, and its owner takes home a cash reward at each stage. Prize money starts from a few thousand rupees at the block level and rises substantially at the district and state levels, with the top state award reaching ₹2 lakh.

The MP Gopal Protsahan Scheme is open to all categories of dairy farmers, in both urban and rural areas, and the competitions are organised annually between October and December. This design deliberately turns milk production into a friendly public contest, where the best-kept animals become visible examples for the whole village or district to learn from.

The programme sits within Madhya Pradesh's broader effort, as one of India's leading milk-producing states, to strengthen native cattle breeds and lift overall milk output - the concern being that as farmers chase quick gains from cross-bred animals, hardy and valuable desi breeds can quietly decline. By rewarding the owners of high-performing indigenous animals, the state hopes to make it worthwhile to keep and improve those breeds.

How to avail the benefit of the scheme?

The process runs offline through the Animal Husbandry Department's existing veterinary network, not through a separate online portal. Applicants can apply by following the steps below:

  • Visit your nearest government veterinary institution (Pashu Chikitsalaya / Pashu Chikitsa Sansthan) or the Block Veterinary Officer, and ask about the current year's Gopal Protsahan competition.
  • Applications are obtained from the veterinary institutions.
  • Register your eligible indigenous cow or buffalo for the competition through that veterinary institution.
  • On the day of the camp, veterinary staff measure the animal's milk yield; the top performers win at the block level and qualify for the district-level competition, and district winners advance to the state level.
  • The reward is paid to the winning owner. The competitions are held annually between October and December, so stay in touch with your local veterinary office for the exact dates and requirements.
