Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview
- The Maharashtra Government introduced the Divyang Shaadi Protsahan Yojana on 17 June 2004 to support the welfare of persons with disabilities.
- The government designed this marriage incentive scheme to provide financial help to disabled couples so they can begin their married life with dignity and financial stability.
- The Department for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities, Government of Maharashtra, implements and oversees this scheme.
- Under this initiative, the state government offers a one-time financial incentive for the marriage of eligible persons with disabilities.
- When a marriage takes place between a disabled person and a non-disabled person, the government provides Rs. 1,50,000 as marriage assistance.
- In simple terms, if either the bride or the groom has a disability, the couple receives Rs. 1,50,000 under the Divyang Shaadi Protsahan Yojana.
- If both the bride and the groom have disabilities, the government increases the incentive amount to Rs. 2,50,000 under the Disabled Marriage Incentive Scheme of the Maharashtra Government.
- Earlier, the government provided only Rs. 50,000 as assistance under this scheme.
- The scheme applies only when the beneficiary has a minimum disability of 40% or more.
- An eligible married couple can apply for marriage assistance within one year of marriage, provided they complete marriage registration at the Sub-Registrar Office.
- The scheme allows financial assistance only for first-time marriages, however, the government has relaxed this condition for divorced individuals.
- A divorced person can apply for benefits under this scheme if they did not receive assistance from this scheme earlier.
- At present, the government has not launched any online application portal or digital application process for the Divyang Shaadi Protsahan Yojana.
- Applicants must submit the marriage incentive application offline at the office of the District Disability Empowerment Officer.
