Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Tamil Nadu Rooftop Solar Subsidy Scheme 2026 is a Tamil Nadu Government initiative that aims to make rooftop solar panel installation more affordable for domestic electricity consumers. Approved through Government Order dated 19 September 2026, the scheme provides additional State subsidy alongside the central assistance available under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The scheme aims to encourage households to adopt solar energy, reduce their electricity expenses, and increase the use of renewable energy across the State.

Eligible households can receive combined central and State financial assistance of up to ₹1 lakh for installing rooftop solar panels. This amount includes the central subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the additional subsidy provided by the Tamil Nadu Government. The total assistance depends on the capacity of the installed rooftop solar system and the applicable scheme conditions.

Under the Tamil Nadu Rooftop Solar Subsidy Scheme, the State Government will provide an additional subsidy of ₹5,000 for rooftop solar systems up to 1 kW, ₹10,000 for systems up to 2 kW, and ₹22,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. When combined with the applicable central subsidy, the total assistance can reach ₹35,000 for a 1 kW system, ₹70,000 for a 2 kW system, and ₹1 lakh for systems of 3 kW and above.

The Tamil Nadu Rooftop Solar Subsidy Scheme aims to benefit 1 lakh domestic electricity consumers, with a budget allocation of ₹50 crore for implementation. The State subsidy is additional to the central assistance and is subject to the prescribed installation, commissioning, and verification requirements. Tamil Nadu has previously supported residential solar installations through the Chief Minister's Solar Rooftop Capital Incentive Scheme, reflecting the State's continued focus on promoting rooftop solar energy.

To receive the subsidy under the Tamil Nadu Rooftop Solar Subsidy Scheme, eligible domestic electricity consumers in Tamil Nadu must follow the application process under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Applicants need to register on the official portal, obtain the required feasibility approval, select an eligible vendor, install the rooftop solar system, and complete the prescribed inspection and commissioning process. The Government Order provides for State subsidy support for eligible consumers registered on the PM Surya Ghar portal from 5 August 2026, subject to the applicable conditions.

Consumers can begin the application process through the official PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana portal. After successful installation and verification, eligible beneficiaries can receive the approved State subsidy directly in their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Applicants should follow the official scheme guidelines to confirm their eligibility, complete the required formalities, and receive the applicable rooftop solar subsidy.
