Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Rajasthan Charm Prashikshan Yojana, popularly known as the Leather Training Scheme, has been supporting traditional leather artisans in the state since 1990. Launched by the Department of Industries, Government of Rajasthan, the scheme was introduced with a clear purpose - to strengthen the leather craft sector, help artisans improve the quality of their products, introduce modern techniques and designs, and open better pathways for self-employment. Over the years, it has grown into an important skill development programme for those engaged in leather work across the state, especially for communities that have been practising this craft for generations.

Under this scheme, free practical training is organised through District Industries and Commerce Centres (Jila Udyog evam Vanijya Kendras). Trainees learn leather dyeing, making of Nagara Jooti, production of various leather goods and toys, along with updated design methods and basic marketing skills. The training is usually conducted in small batches so that every participant receives proper attention and hands-on experience. The standard duration of the programme is two months, which allows enough time for trainees to practise the techniques thoroughly and gain confidence in their craft.

The Rajasthan leather training scheme is open to residents of Rajasthan who meet the basic eligibility criteria - generally aged between 18 and 35 years and preferably having passed Class 8. New batches are announced from time to time in different districts according to local demand, and applications are invited offline at the local District Industries Centre. Along with free training, participants are also provided a monthly stipend during the course and a toolkit after successful completion to help them start or expand their own work. This combination of skill training, financial support and basic tools makes the programme especially useful for young artisans who want to turn their traditional knowledge into a sustainable livelihood.

In recent years, the programme has continued to focus on quality improvement, new designs and marketing support so that artisans can better compete in the market and increase their income. District-level centres keep organising fresh batches as per local needs, making the scheme an ongoing opportunity for both men and women engaged in leather work. Whether someone is already working in the craft or wants to enter the leather sector, the Charm Prashikshan scheme offers a practical way to upgrade skills and improve earning potential.
