Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Sikkim Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana is a financial assistance scheme of the Government of Sikkim that supports eligible non-working mothers across the state. The scheme aims to improve the financial security of mothers and encourage them to become more economically self-reliant. Under the current benefit structure, eligible beneficiaries receive ₹40,000 per year, generally provided in two instalments of ₹20,000 each.

Run by the Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department, the Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana covers eligible mothers between 18 and 59 years of age, including unmarried, widowed, divorced and separated mothers who have responsibility for children. The scheme also covers eligible POCSO victims as prescribed in the official guidelines. Applicants must meet the prescribed residential, household-category and employment-related conditions to receive the benefit.

The financial assistance under the Sikkim Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana can help beneficiaries meet their children's educational needs, family expenses and livelihood requirements. Mothers can also use the assistance to support livelihood activities such as agriculture and animal husbandry. Through this financial support, the government aims to strengthen the financial position of eligible mothers and promote self-reliance.

Women who want to receive the Aama Sashaktikaran benefit must satisfy the prescribed eligibility conditions. They need to possess the required Sikkim Subject Certificate, Certificate of Identification or Residential Certificate and meet the applicable household-category, employment and pension conditions. Applicants must also submit the required documents with the prescribed application form.

Eligible applicants can apply through the prescribed process by obtaining the application form from the concerned Block Development Office (BDO). The submitted application and documents are scrutinised and verified by the concerned officials before the eligible beneficiary is approved for assistance. The government also conducts constituency-level benefit distribution programmes, including cheque distribution to beneficiaries under the scheme.

At present, the Sikkim Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana covers 32,000 mothers across all 31 territorial Assembly Constituencies and the Sangha Constituency, with roughly 1,000 beneficiaries in each constituency. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has announced that the coverage will increase to 50,000 beneficiaries from 2027, with more than 1,500 mothers in every constituency. The scheme is part of Sikkim's wider women-focused welfare initiatives, which also include the Sikkim Aama Sahayog Yojana for 4 free LPG refills per year and the Bahini Yojana for girl students.
