Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Tamil Nadu Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme, formerly known as the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme, is a school breakfast programme of the Tamil Nadu Government that provides free breakfast to eligible students on working school days. The Government has renamed the scheme in honour of former Chief Minister K. Kamarajar, who is widely associated with the development of Tamil Nadu's school meal initiatives. The renaming was announced while presenting the Tamil Nadu Budget 2026-27 on 5 August 2026, along with a major expansion of the scheme.

Earlier, the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme covered students from Classes I to V. Under the latest announcement, the Government is expanding the scheme to students of Classes VI to VIII in Government and Government-aided schools. This expansion will extend the announced coverage from Classes I to V to Classes I to VIII and benefit an additional 15.14 lakh students across 15,414 schools. The expanded coverage will take effect from 22 September 2026.

The Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme continues to focus on providing students with a morning meal so that they can begin their school day with breakfast. The weekday breakfast menu includes different preparations such as Uppama, Kitchadi, Pongal and sweet dishes, with alternative food options specified for different days. The prescribed quantity of raw material is 50 grams per child per day, while locally available millet-based breakfast is also utilised for two days a week.

The Tamil Nadu Government has allocated ₹710 crore for the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme in the Revised Budget Estimates for 2026-27. The expanded scheme is expected to strengthen access to breakfast for a larger group of school students while continuing the existing school-based delivery model. Students and parents do not need to submit a separate application or registration form to receive the breakfast through eligible schools.

The Classes VI to VIII expansion of the Tamil Nadu Breakfast Scheme is scheduled to begin from 22 September 2026. Further operational details for the newly added classes will depend on the implementation instructions issued by the concerned Tamil Nadu Government department.
