Telangana Breakfast Scheme details

Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Telangana Breakfast Scheme (Alpaharam–Palu Pathakam) is a flagship student welfare and nutrition initiative launched by the Government of Telangana to provide a nutritious breakfast to students studying in Government educational institutions across the state. Popularly referred to as the Telangana Breakfast and Milk Scheme, the programme was announced during the Telangana Budget 2026-27, where the State Government promised to introduce a dedicated breakfast programme for students from Pre-Primary (PP) to Intermediate (Class 12). Following the budget announcement, the scheme was launched after the reopening of schools for the 2026-27 academic session to ensure that no child starts the school day on an empty stomach.

Under the Telangana Breakfast Scheme, eligible students receive a nutritious breakfast on all working days. Along with breakfast, students are provided with milk on three days every week and ragi malt (ragi java) on the remaining three days to support balanced nutrition and healthy growth. The weekly menu includes a variety of food items such as dosa, chapati, millet idli, puri, millet upma, pongal, and bonda. Through this School Breakfast Programme, the Telangana Government aims to improve the nutritional status of students while addressing issues such as morning hunger and nutritional deficiencies.

The primary objective of the Telangana Breakfast and Milk Scheme is to improve health outcomes, increase school attendance, enhance punctuality, and strengthen learning outcomes among students. The initiative is expected to reduce absenteeism and dropout rates while helping children remain active and focused during classroom activities. By providing breakfast at school, the Government also seeks to reduce the burden on parents and encourage greater enrollment and retention in Government educational institutions.

The Telangana Breakfast Scheme complements the existing Mid-Day Meal Scheme (PM POSHAN) being implemented in Government educational institutions. While the Mid-Day Meal Scheme provides nutritious lunch to eligible students during school hours, the Telangana Breakfast Scheme ensures that students receive a healthy breakfast before classes begin. Together, these initiatives strengthen student nutrition, support healthy growth and development, and help create a hunger-free learning environment in Government schools and educational institutions across Telangana.

The scheme covers students studying from Pre-Primary (PP) to Intermediate (Class 12) in eligible Government educational institutions across Telangana. No separate application is required to receive benefits under the scheme, as eligible beneficiaries are identified through school enrollment records. Breakfast is served directly through participating schools and implementing agencies authorised by the Government. In Hyderabad district, the first phase of implementation covered 45 Government schools and approximately 12,437 students, with gradual expansion planned across the state.

The Alpaharam–Palu Pathakam is expected to benefit nearly 29 lakh students and represents a significant step toward improving child nutrition, educational participation, and student well-being. By combining a nutritious breakfast with milk and ragi malt, the Telangana Breakfast Scheme supports healthy physical and mental development while contributing to the vision of hunger-free education and better learning opportunities for every child.
