Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

If you are a weaver in Andhra Pradesh, here is some great news for you. The Andhra Pradesh Government has launched a free electricity scheme especially for handloom and power loom weavers, and it is a big relief for thousands of weaving families who have been struggling with high electricity bills for years.

The TDP made this promise to weavers in its 2024 Assembly Election Manifesto, and the party is now delivering on it. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu officially launched the Free Electricity Scheme for Weavers on April 1, 2026, at a public meeting under the "Pedala Sevalo" programme in Nellore district.

Under this AP Free Electricity Scheme for weavers, the government gives handloom units 200 free electricity units every month and power loom units 500 free units every month- completely free of cost. The government estimates that 93,000 handloom weavers and 11,488 power loom weavers will directly receive the benefit of this scheme. The government will spend approximately Rs 150 crore annually to run this scheme and ensure that weavers no longer have to worry about soaring power bills eating into their income.

Scheme Benefits

• 200 free electricity units per month for handloom weavers.
• 500 free electricity units per month for power loom weavers.
• Both families will save between Rs 8,000 and Rs 21,000/- annually.
• The scheme covers a total of 1,04,488 weaving families across Andhra Pradesh.

Eligibility Requirements

• The applicant must be a permanent resident of Andhra Pradesh.
• The applicant must be an active handloom weaver or power loom operator.
• The applicant must have registered their weaving unit with the state's Handloom and Textile Department.

Steps to Apply

The government has not yet released the official application process for this scheme. However, based on how similar schemes work in Andhra Pradesh, the process may follow one of these two ways:

First – Direct Benefit (No Application Needed)

• The government may use its existing weaver registration records to identify eligible families on its own.
• It will directly adjust the electricity bills of registered handloom and power loom units.
• Weavers will receive zero charges on their monthly bill up to the prescribed free units.
• In this case, weavers do not need to do anything separately.

Second – Application-Based Process

• The government may ask weavers to apply through an official portal or the nearest Mee Seva centre.
• Weavers will need to fill in basic details like their name, Aadhaar number, weaver registration number, and electricity consumer number.
• They will also need to submit documents like their Aadhaar card, weaver identity card, and bank account details.
• Once the government verifies the application, it will enrol the weaver and the free electricity benefit will start from the next billing cycle.
