Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Government of Bihar is continuously working to improve educational opportunities for students belonging to the Extremely Backward Class (EBC) community. Many talented students from economically weaker families are unable to continue their education because suitable hostel facilities are not available near their educational institutions. To address this challenge, the Backward Class and Extremely Backward Class Welfare Department, Government of Bihar, operates 38 Jannayak Karpoori Thakur Chhatrawas across different districts of the state.

These hostels provide safe and affordable residential accommodation to eligible EBC students who are pursuing their studies in recognised schools, colleges, universities, and technical institutions. Almost every hostel has a capacity of around 100 students, enabling thousands of students to stay in a secure environment while continuing their education.

The department has developed these hostels with the objective of creating an environment that supports both academic and personal development. Students residing in Jannayak Karpoori Thakur Chhatrawas receive several essential facilities, including uninterrupted electricity, clean RO drinking water, a digital library, a regular library, sports and recreational facilities, common rooms with television for leisure or online learning, CCTV surveillance for safety, and support staff such as cooks, sweepers, and security guards.

The hostel admission process is conducted online through the official BCEBC Hostel Portal, where students can check district-wise hostel availability, vacant seats, and submit their applications. Admission is granted only after verification of eligibility and required documents by the department.

Students admitted to these hostels may also become eligible for other hostel-related benefits administered separately by the department, such as the Bihar Mukhyamantri Pichhda Varg Evam Atyant Pichhda Varg Chhatrawas Anudaan Yojana, which provides monthly financial assistance, and the Hostel Food Grain Supply Scheme, under which eligible hostel residents receive monthly food grains. However, these are separate schemes and are administered independently from the hostel admission process.

If you are an eligible student belonging to the Extremely Backward Class (EBC) community and are looking for a safe residential facility to continue your education, Bihar Jannayak Karpoori Thakur Chhatrawas provides an excellent opportunity to pursue your studies in a disciplined and supportive environment.
