Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

Fulfilling its election guarantees, the Congress-led Telangana Government launched the Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme to provide free electricity up to 200 units every month for eligible domestic consumers in the state. Through this welfare initiative, the government aims to reduce the burden of electricity expenses on economically weaker households and improve financial support for families with low electricity consumption. Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme is one of the major guarantee schemes announced along with Mahalakshmi Scheme, Rythu Bharosa, and Yuva Vikasam during the Telangana Assembly Elections.

Under the Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme, eligible households consuming less than 200 units of electricity in a month receive zero electricity bills. However, if monthly electricity consumption exceeds 200 units, the consumer has to pay the complete electricity bill amount. The benefits of the scheme are available only for domestic electricity service connections, and commercial electricity consumers are not eligible for the subsidy. The scheme provides benefits for only one domestic electricity connection per household.

Both house owners and tenants living in rented houses can apply for the Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme if they fulfil the prescribed eligibility conditions. Tenants with valid domestic electricity connections and linked white ration cards can also receive free electricity benefits under the scheme. This provision ensures that even families living in rented accommodations receive support from the government through free power supply benefits. Beneficiaries need to complete the registration process through Praja Palana Centres or designated government offices to receive the scheme benefits.

Beneficiaries can also check the status of their Gruha Jyothi application online through the Praja Palana Portal after successful submission of the application form.

• Telangana Government provides the following benefits under Gruha Jyothi Scheme:-

Eligibility Requirements

• Applicants need to fulfil the following eligibility conditions to receive free electricity benefits under Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme:-
  • Applicant must be a permanent resident of Telangana.
  • Applicant must have a valid domestic electricity connection.
  • Monthly electricity consumption should remain below 200 units.
  • Benefits are available only for domestic electricity consumers.
  • Only one electricity service connection per family is eligible.
  • Rented families with a domestic connection.
  • White Ration Card should be linked with the Aadhaar Number.

Ineligibility Criteria

• Applicants will not receive benefits under Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme if :-
  • Monthly electricity consumption exceeds 200 units.
  • Electricity connection is commercial or non-domestic.
  • Multiple electricity connections are linked to one family.
  • Aadhaar and ration card details are not properly linked.

Steps to Apply

• Eligible beneficiaries can apply for the Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme to receive free electricity benefits.
• Beneficiaries can apply for the Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme in two ways: -
  • Online through Praja Palana Centers.
  • Offline by submitting the application form at the Mandal or Municipal Offices.

Online Process

• Visit the nearest Praja Palana Centre or MeeSeva Centre.
• Request officials to fill out the Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme application form.
• Provide personal details and required documents during registration.
• Verify all entered details before final submission.
• Submit the application form successfully.
• Applicants receive confirmation details on their registered mobile number.
• Authorities verify the submitted details and approve eligible beneficiaries.
• Applicants can check their application status online through the Praja Palana Portal.

Offline Process

• Residents of Telangana can apply for free electricity up to 200 units per month as promised under the Gruha Jyothi Scheme through the Application Form.
• Application Form of Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme is available free of cost at any of the following government offices:-
  • Municipal Corporation Office.
  • Gram Panchayat Office.
  • Gram Sabha Office.
• Collect Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme Application Form and fill it properly.
• Attach all the required documents with the application form.
• Submit the Application Form of Gruha Jyothi Scheme of the Telangana Government along with the documents in the same office from where the form was collected.
• The received Application Form will be forwarded to the electricity department after preliminary verification.
• The Department of Electricity then issues subsidised electricity bills to those people who consume less than 200 units of electricity in a month.

Transfer Gruha Jyothi Scheme Benefit from One House to Another

• Telangana Government allows eligible beneficiaries to transfer Gruha Jyothi Scheme benefits from one electricity service connection to another in genuine cases.
• Transfer of benefits is useful in the following situations:-
  • The family shifted from a rented house to their own house.
  • The families shifted to a new rented house.
  • The beneficiary changed residence within Telangana.
  • Old electricity connection became inactive, and a new domestic connection was taken.
• To transfer Gruha Jyothi benefits, beneficiaries need to visit the nearest Electricity Office.
• Applicants need to provide details of :-
  • Old Electricity Service Connection Number.
  • New Electricity Service Connection Number.
  • Aadhaar Card linked with the scheme.
  • White Ration Card Details.
• Applicants may also need to submit :-
  • Latest Electricity Bill of both connections.
  • Address Proof of the new residence.
  • Mobile Number for OTP verification.
• Beneficiaries need to remove the existing Gruha Jyothi registration linked with the old electricity connection before applying for benefits in another house.
• After removal of the previous registration, beneficiaries can submit a fresh application for Gruha Jyothi Scheme using the new domestic electricity connection.
• Beneficiaries need to ensure that the new electricity connection is domestic in nature and fulfils all eligibility conditions of the scheme.
• Since benefits are available for only one domestic electricity service connection per family, beneficiaries cannot receive benefits for multiple electricity connections at the same time.

Surrender Gruha Jyothi Scheme Benefit

• Beneficiaries who no longer wish to continue free electricity benefits under the Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme can voluntarily surrender the scheme benefits.
• Surrender of benefits may be required in the following situations:-
  • Household shifted outside Telangana.
  • Electricity connection converted from domestic to commercial.
  • Beneficiary no longer fulfils the eligibility conditions.
  • Duplicate benefits are active on more than one service connection.
• To surrender Gruha Jyothi benefits, beneficiaries need to visit the nearest Electricity Office, MeeSeva Centre, or Praja Palana Centre.
• Submit a written request mentioning :-
  • Electricity Service Connection Number.
  • Aadhaar Number.
  • Registered Mobile Number.
  • Reason for surrendering benefits.
• Beneficiaries also need to attach a copy of the latest electricity bill and Aadhaar Card.
• After verification, officials will remove the service connection from the Gruha Jyothi beneficiary database.
• Once the surrender process is completed, normal electricity bills will be generated for the connection.
