Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview
The West Bengal Disability Pension Scheme was launched by the Government of West Bengal in 2010 to provide monthly financial assistance to disabled and specially-abled citizens who are facing financial difficulties. Through this social welfare pension scheme, the state government offers monthly pension support to eligible beneficiaries so they can manage their daily expenses and live with greater financial security and independence. The scheme is administered by the Department of Women & Child Development and Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal.
At present, eligible beneficiaries receive a monthly financial assistance of Rs. 1,000/- under the scheme. During the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Election, the ruling party had promised to double the monthly pension amount. However, in the 2026-27 State Budget, the Government has officially proposed to enhance the monthly pension by Rs. 500 for beneficiaries covered under various social security pension schemes. If the proposal is implemented, beneficiaries under the West Bengal Disability Pension Scheme may receive Rs. 1,500/- per month instead of the existing Rs. 1,000/-. The enhanced pension amount will become effective only after the Government issues the necessary notification and implementation guidelines.
The West Bengal Disability Pension Scheme has now been merged with the Manabik Pension Scheme, which provides monthly financial assistance to eligible persons with disabilities in the state. Applicants are generally required to submit a valid Disability Certificate issued by the competent authority while applying for pension benefits. In cases where the disability certificate is unavailable, a medical certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner may also be accepted as proof of disability.
The scheme is mainly intended for financially weaker disabled persons who are unable to maintain themselves properly due to physical or mental disability. Only permanent residents of West Bengal or applicants residing in the state for at least 10 years are eligible to apply. Applicants must also satisfy the prescribed income criteria to receive pension benefits under the scheme.
Eligible applicants can apply through the prescribed application form available at designated government offices. After successful verification and approval, the pension amount is directly transferred to the beneficiary's bank account every month through DBT mode.
