Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview
- One of the major welfare announcements made by the Delhi Government was the Atal Canteen Scheme.
- This scheme has introduced specifically for people who struggle to manage their families' daily food requirements due to financial constraints.
- The BJP-led Delhi Government launched the Atal Canteen Scheme on 25 December 2025, marking the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
- Through this initiative, the government aims to address hunger and food insecurity among the economically weaker sections of society.
- The core objective of the Atal Canteen Scheme is to ensure that no resident of Delhi sleeps hungry and to improve the nutritional intake of poor and vulnerable communities.
- Under this scheme, the Delhi Government plans to establish 100 Atal Canteens across the city, offering wholesome meals at a highly subsidised rate.
- On the launch date, 45 Atal Canteens were inaugurated, and the remaining 55 canteens will be opened in phases in the near future.
- At each Atal Canteen, beneficiaries can receive a complete meal for just Rs. 5 per plate.
- The food plate served under the scheme includes :-
- Chapati (Roti).
- Rice.
- Vegetable Sabzi.
- Pickle (Achar).
- The canteens serve two meals every day, with lunch available from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM and dinner from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM.
- Any person in need can visit the nearest Atal Canteen, collect a QR-based token from the counter, and enjoy a nutritious meal at an affordable price.
- To maintain proper distribution, the government has fixed a daily limit of 500 food plates during lunch hours and 500 food plates during dinner hours at each canteen.
- For the effective implementation of this scheme, the Delhi Government has allocated Rs. 100 crore.

Scheme Benefits
- Atal Canteens will serve tasty and nutritious meals at a very affordable price.
- Each food plate will be available for just Rs. 5.
- Residents of slum areas and JJ Clusters can avail a complete meal at Rs. 5 per plate from these canteens.
- The canteens will operate from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM and again in the evening from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM.
- Every Atal Canteen will provide 500 food plates during the morning and afternoon and 500 food plates in the evening on a daily basis.
Eligibility Requirements
- The benefits of nutritious food in Atal Canteens will be available to beneficiaries who meet the following eligibility :-
- Only residents of Delhi can avail of the facility of Atal Canteens.
- The beneficiary must be living in slum areas (Jhuggi-Jhopdi) or JJ Clusters within Delhi.

Steps to Apply
- There is no separate application process to obtain a food plate at just 5 rupees from the Atal Canteen.
- Eligible beneficiaries can directly visit an Atal Canteen during breakfast, lunch, or dinner hours and receive healthy and nutritious meals for just Rs. 5 per plate.
- The Delhi Government has started 45 Atal Canteens across different locations in the city.
- In the coming days, the government will open 55 more Atal Canteens, expanding the reach of this scheme.
- People can visit their nearest Atal Canteen between 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM and again from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM.
- To avail the meal, visitors only need to purchase a token from the counter by paying Rs. 5.
- After collecting the token, they can receive the food plate from the takeaway counter and enjoy a nutritious meal.
