Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Delhi Social Welfare Internship Programme is an initiative of the Department of Social Welfare, Government of NCT of Delhi that enables Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) students to gain practical experience by working in government-run social welfare institutions. The programme is open to students pursuing Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Nursing, Law, Special Education, Rehabilitation Sciences, and other related disciplines. It bridges the gap between classroom learning and practical field exposure while helping students develop professional and interpersonal skills.

The Delhi Social Welfare Internship Programme includes two types of internships: Field-Based Internship and Research Internship. Field-based interns work directly with senior citizens and persons with disabilities by assisting in daily care, rehabilitation, counselling support, recreational activities, and institutional services. Research interns contribute to welfare scheme evaluation, case studies, surveys, documentation, data collection, and research activities that support the Department's social welfare initiatives.

Selected students may be placed in various Homes and Institutions operated by the Department of Social Welfare, including Asha Kiran (Rohini), old-age homes, senior citizen homes, and hostels for visually impaired students, depending on the internship requirements. During the internship, students work under the guidance of departmental officials and gain first-hand experience in the functioning of government welfare institutions.

The Delhi Social Welfare Internship Programme is offered completely free of cost, and students are not required to pay any application or participation fee. However, the internship does not provide any stipend or honorarium. Eligible students can apply either directly to the Department of Social Welfare or through their college or university, with the final approval being granted by the Department. This internship is an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical exposure while contributing to the welfare of senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
