Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

Pursuing a Ph.D. in biotechnology or life sciences can open doors to a career in scientific research, but completing doctoral studies also requires time, dedication, and financial support. The DBT Junior Research Fellowship (DBT-JRF) Programme helps eligible Indian students pursue full-time Ph.D. research by providing financial assistance. Under the fellowship structure described in the research brief, selected candidates receive ₹37,000 per month for the first two years, followed by ₹42,000 per month for the remaining three years after promotion to Senior Research Fellow (SRF), subject to assessment. They may also receive ₹30,000 per year as contingency assistance and House Rent Allowance (HRA), where applicable. The fellowship can support research for up to five years, subject to the programme's rules and conditions.

The programme was launched in 2004 by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. It is managed through the DBT-HRD Project and Management Unit at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB) in Faridabad. The DBT-JRF fellowship is intended for eligible Indian citizens residing in India who want to undertake doctoral research in biotechnology, life sciences or related disciplines at a recognised Indian university or research institution. Under the last standalone BET eligibility rules, candidates could qualify through specified four-year undergraduate, engineering or postgraduate qualifications, with minimum marks and age limits varying by qualification and category. For the December 2026 Joint CSIR–UGC NET route, different eligibility and age criteria apply, including a minimum of 55% marks in a master's degree for the general category and 50% for specified reserved and other eligible categories. Applicants should therefore follow the rules for the examination cycle through which they are applying.

Selection and fellowship benefits also depend on the applicable category and verification requirements. Under the earlier BET system, Category-I candidates could receive the DBT-JRF fellowship, while Category-II candidates did not receive the DBT-JRF fellowship itself; they could be considered for positions in DBT-sponsored projects under the relevant rules. A selected candidate must obtain Ph.D. admission or registration at a recognised Indian institution and complete the award-letter and fellowship-activation process through the official DBT-JRF portal. The fellowship is paid through the host institution's bank account rather than directly into the fellow's personal account. Continuation and upgradation to SRF depend on satisfactory research progress and assessment by a Three Member Assessment Committee.

The application process is online. For the December 2026 examination, candidates should use the Joint CSIR-UGC NET application portal and select subject code 703, Life Sciences and Bio-Technology, while following the current National Testing Agency (NTA) bulletin. After qualifying and being selected for the DBT fellowship, candidates must submit the required academic, identity and category documents, obtain the award letter, register for a Ph.D. within the prescribed period, and upload the documents needed to activate the fellowship.

Students exploring other research funding opportunities can also read about the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) Scheme, which supports eligible Ph.D. students in science, engineering and technology, and the INSPIRE Scholarship for Higher Education (INSPIRE-SHE), which supports eligible students pursuing science education. Students may also explore the Savitribai Jyotirao Phule Fellowship for Single Girl Child, intended for eligible single girl children pursuing a regular, full-time Ph.D. Each scheme has its own eligibility requirements, benefits and application process, so applicants should read the relevant scheme guidelines before applying.

DBT-JRF Fellowship Amount and Duration

The DBT Junior Research Fellowship (DBT-JRF) Programme provides financial support to eligible candidates pursuing Ph.D. research in biotechnology and life sciences. The fellowship is initially awarded at the Junior Research Fellow (JRF) level. After completing two years, a fellow may be upgraded to Senior Research Fellow (SRF) following a satisfactory assessment of research progress.

Benefit

Amount or Duration

Junior Research Fellow (JRF)₹37,000 per month for the first two years
Senior Research Fellow (SRF)₹42,000 per month for the remaining three years, subject to successful assessment and upgradation
Contingency Grant₹30,000 per year, calculated on a pro-rata basis
House Rent Allowance (HRA)Applicable as per government rules if eligible and institutional accommodation is not provided
Maximum Fellowship DurationFive years, subject to the applicable conditions

The revised JRF and SRF rates became applicable from 1 January 2023. The fellowship start date is generally the date of joining the Ph.D. programme or the date of issue of the award letter, whichever is later. The fellowship may end earlier if the fellow completes the Ph.D. viva-voce, resigns or the fellowship is cancelled, as applicable under the programme rules.

Important: The SRF amount is not automatic after two years. The fellow must satisfy the prescribed assessment and continuation requirements. Read the official revised emoluments notice.

DBT-JRF Category-I vs Category-II

Under the Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET), candidates were shortlisted in two categories based on their performance and the applicable selection rules. The main difference is that Category-I candidates are eligible for the DBT-JRF fellowship, while Category-II candidates do not receive a fellowship under the DBT-JRF Programme.

Basis

Category-I

Category-II

DBT-JRF fellowshipEligible to receive the fellowship, subject to the required conditionsNot eligible for a fellowship under the DBT-JRF Programme
Ph.D. researchCan activate the fellowship after securing eligible Ph.D. admission and completing the required formalitiesMay pursue a Ph.D. subject to the institution's admission and selection rules
DBT-sponsored projectsMay pursue research under the fellowship rulesMay be considered for a position in a DBT-sponsored project through the project's selection process
Selection by a project investigatorGoverned by the applicable fellowship and institutional requirementsProject investigators are not required to select candidates from the Category-II list

Category-II selection does not guarantee a project position or funding. If a Category-II candidate is appointed to a DBT-sponsored project, any fellowship or remuneration will depend on the project's terms and the applicable rules. It should not be treated as a DBT-JRF award.

Note: These categories refer to the standalone BET selection process. BET 2026 was the last standalone examination, with the Joint CSIR–UGC–DBT JRF-NET route introduced from December 2026. Candidates applying through the new examination should follow its current official notification for the applicable selection and fellowship rules.

Steps to Apply

The application process for the DBT Junior Research Fellowship (DBT-JRF) Programme involves qualifying for the relevant examination and then completing the fellowship formalities. Since the standalone Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) ended with the 2026 examination, candidates applying through the new route should follow the Joint CSIR–UGC–DBT JRF-NET process for the December 2026 cycle.

Step 1: Register for the Joint CSIR–UGC NET Examination

Candidates applying for the December 2026 cycle should open the Joint CSIR–UGC NET application portal. On the homepage, select the link for the December 2026 online application and choose the option to register as a new candidate.

Enter your name and other personal details, email address, mobile number and the information requested on the registration form. Use your own active email address and mobile number so you can receive examination updates and access your application when needed.

Step 2: Fill in the Application Form

After registration, log in using your application number and password. Enter your educational qualifications, category and other required details carefully.

Select subject code 703 – Life Sciences and Bio-Technology (LS-BT), which is the relevant subject for candidates applying through the merged examination route for DBT-related fellowships. Before moving forward, review the details you have entered and correct any mistakes.

Step 3: Upload Documents and Pay the Examination Fee

Upload the photograph, signature, identity proof and other documents requested in the application form. Make sure the files meet the size and format requirements mentioned in the current information bulletin.

Pay the examination fee through the available online payment method. For the December 2026 cycle, the research brief lists the following fees:

  • General category: ₹1,150
  • EWS and OBC-NCL: ₹600
  • SC, ST, PwD and Third Gender: ₹325

After payment, save the transaction details and download the confirmation page for your records.

Step 4: Check the Examination Updates and Appear for the Test

Once your application is submitted, keep checking the Joint CSIR–UGC NET website for updates about the admit card, examination schedule, answer keys and results. Prepare according to the official LS-BT syllabus and examination bulletin.

The research brief lists the registration period for the December 2026 examination as 7 October to 5 November 2026, with a late-fee window from 6 to 9 November 2026. The scheduled examination dates are 19, 22 and 27 December 2026. Check the latest official notices in case the schedule changes.

Step 5: Check Your Result and DBT Fellowship Selection

After the result is announced, check your score and the relevant fellowship-selection notices. Qualifying the examination does not automatically mean that every candidate will receive a DBT-JRF fellowship. The selection process and fellowship allocation will follow the applicable rules for the merged examination.

The number of DBT fellowships available through the December 2026 cycle had not been officially announced in the research brief. Candidates should therefore check the Department of Biotechnology website and the Joint CSIR–UGC NET portal for updates on DBT-specific selection and fellowship instructions.

Step 6: Apply for the DBT-JRF Award Letter

Candidates selected for the DBT-JRF fellowship should complete the award-letter process through the DBT-JRF portal. Open the portal, find the relevant login or award-letter section, register or sign in as instructed, and fill in the required details.

Upload the documents requested for verification, such as your examination scorecard, qualifying degree certificate, marksheets, photograph, date-of-birth proof and category certificate, where applicable. Submit the application online and use the portal's status section to follow its progress. The older BET process required documents to be submitted within the prescribed period; candidates selected through the merged examination should follow the deadline specified in their current instructions.

Step 7: Secure Ph.D. Admission and Activate the Fellowship

After receiving the award letter, obtain admission or registration in a Ph.D. programme at a recognised Indian university or research institution. Then sign in to the DBT-JRF portal and submit the documents required to activate the fellowship.

These may include your award letter, Ph.D. enrolment or joining letter, bank details, the host institution's NEFT/RTGS mandate and a hostel or HRA declaration. The institution and relevant authority will verify the documents before the fellowship is activated. The start date and activation deadline are governed by the applicable fellowship rules and the instructions issued with the award.

Step 8: Receive Fellowship Payments and Complete Progress Reviews

Once the fellowship is activated, the host institution submits the required claims and receives the fellowship funds in its bank account. The institution then pays the fellow according to the applicable procedure. Fellows must also submit progress reports and other documents when required.

After the first two years, upgradation from Junior Research Fellow (JRF) to Senior Research Fellow (SRF) depends on satisfactory research progress and assessment by a Three Member Assessment Committee. Continued support remains subject to the fellowship's rules and approval requirements.

For examination-related assistance, candidates can use the contact details published on the Joint CSIR–UGC NET website. For DBT-JRF award-letter, activation or payment queries, contact the Regional Centre for Biotechnology's DBT-HRD Project and Management Unit at [email protected] or 0129-2848800. Always rely on the latest official notices for the current procedure and deadlines.

DBT-JRF Fellowship Payment and Renewal

The DBT-JRF fellowship is released to the bank account of the host university or institution, rather than directly to the fellow's personal bank account. The institution processes the fellowship payment after the required documents and claims have been submitted and accepted under the applicable procedure.

How Fellowship Payments Work

  • Institution-based payment: DBT-JRF funds are released to the host institution's bank account through the prescribed disbursement process.
  • Required documentation: The institution and fellow must submit the prescribed claims and supporting documents within the relevant timelines.
  • Contingency and HRA: Eligible contingency and HRA claims are governed by the applicable programme and government rules.
  • Record keeping: Fellows should retain their award letter, enrolment documents, payment records and research-related documents for future verification.

Progress Reports and Fellowship Continuation

Fellows must make satisfactory progress in their Ph.D. research and submit progress reports and other required documents through their institution. Continuation of financial support depends on compliance with the programme's conditions and the relevant institutional and assessment procedures.

Upgradation from JRF to SRF

After completing the first two years, a JRF may be considered for upgradation to SRF. The fellow's research progress must be reviewed by a Three Member Assessment Committee, and the required assessment report must be submitted. The enhanced SRF fellowship of ₹42,000 per month applies after successful upgradation.

Continuation During the Remaining Years

Support during the remaining fellowship period depends on satisfactory research progress and fulfilment of the applicable reporting and assessment requirements. The total fellowship tenure is up to five years, but it may end earlier if the Ph.D. viva-voce is completed, the fellow resigns or the fellowship is cancelled under the programme rules.

For current payment forms, reporting requirements and instructions, refer to the DBT-JRF Fellowship Disbursement page and the DBT-JRF portal.
