Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview
In Uttar Pradesh, Matikala (pottery) is not just a traditional craft but a primary source of income for many artisan families. Despite having strong traditional knowledge, many artisans struggle to adapt to changing market demands, modern production techniques, and business practices.
Recognising this gap, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has introduced the Matikala Kaushal Vikas Yojana to focus specifically on skill enhancement and practical training. The scheme is designed to bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern market requirements.
Unlike schemes that provide financial or material support, this initiative focuses on hands-on training and capacity building, enabling artisans to improve product quality, adopt better techniques, and understand essential aspects of running a small enterprise.
As part of a broader effort to support the Matikala sector, the state government has also introduced schemes such as the Uttar Pradesh Matikala Tool-Kits Vitran Yojana and the Uttar Pradesh Mukhyamantri Matikala Rojgaar Yojana. While these schemes provide tools and financial assistance for self-employment, the Kaushal Vikas Yojana plays a central role by building the core skills required for long-term sustainability.
Under this scheme, artisans are provided structured training programs that include skill development as well as practical guidance on business-related aspects. The training is conducted at divisional training centers established under the Khadi and Gramodyog Board, covering both rural and urban areas of the state.
