Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Karnataka Sir C.V. Raman Scholarship Scheme is a merit-based scholarship by the Department of Collegiate Education (DCE), Government of Karnataka, for bright students enrolling in a B.Sc. degree programme. The department officially calls it the "Scholarship to Encourage Bright Students to Study Science at Degree Level (Sir C.V. Raman Scholarship)". The Government of Karnataka introduced the scheme in 2001-02, and it continues to support science students in Government and Aided Colleges under the department.

The state government launched this scholarship to encourage meritorious and talented students to study science at the degree level. The objective of the scheme is to motivate students who perform well in their previous examinations to choose basic science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology and Geology, and to keep them focused on their studies until they complete their B.Sc. degree.

Under the Sir C.V. Raman Scholarship Scheme, every selected student receives a scholarship of ₹5,000 per year. The department awards the scholarship to meritorious students admitted to the first year of B.Sc., and the scholarship continues for the second and third year if the student passes the semester examinations. To get the renewal, the student must pass all previous semester examinations in the first attempt and maintain at least 60% marks in all semesters of the first and second year of B.Sc.

The scheme follows a simple merit rule. General category students need at least 65% marks, and SC/ST students need at least 60% marks in the previous examination (II PUC for fresh applicants), and they must clear it in the first attempt. The student must also study at least two basic science subjects in B.Sc. The scheme does not set any family income limit or caste restriction, so students of all categories can benefit. Students apply online through the Seva One Karnataka portal or through the Karnataka State Scholarship Portal, where the department displays the scheme eligibility.

The Sir C.V. Raman Scholarship also carries a strict condition. If a beneficiary discontinues college after receiving the scholarship or fails to maintain adequate attendance, the college recovers the full scholarship amount from the student before issuing the Transfer Certificate and returns it to the government through challan. If the college fails to do so, the department recovers the amount from the Principal.

Besides the Sir C.V. Raman Scholarship Scheme, the Karnataka government also implements the Chief Minister Raitha Vidya Nidhi Scheme (KRVN), which provides financial assistance to children of farmers for pursuing education from secondary to higher levels, and the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship Scheme, which supports eligible students for higher studies in foreign universities ranked within the QS World Ranking top 325. Interested students can explore the complete details of both schemes here.
