Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

• The Central Government introduced the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme on 14-03-2024 as a pilot project in Chandigarh and Assam.
• On 05-05-2025, the government expanded the scheme across India.
• On 14 February 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched it nationwide with the new name "PM Rahat Scheme."
• PM RAHAT stands for "Prime Minister's Road Accident Victims Hospitalization & Assured Treatment Scheme."
• The government designed this scheme to strengthen emergency medical care and provide immediate treatment during the golden hour after a road accident.
• The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways implements the scheme in coordination with State Health Agencies, police departments, and empanelled hospitals.
• Under the PM RAHAT Yojana, the government provides free cashless treatment to people injured in road accidents.
• Each victim can receive treatment benefits up to Rs. 1,50,000/- under the PM RAHAT Scheme.
• The scheme covers medical expenses for up to 7 days from the date of the accident.
• It applies to all road accidents caused by any motor vehicle on any type of road in India.
• The injured person must seek treatment at a hospital impanelled under the Ayushman Bharat - PM Jan Arogya Yojana to receive cashless benefits.
• The victim or any helper must inform the police within 24 hours of the accident.
• Empanelled hospitals cannot charge the patient any money for treatment under this scheme.
• After providing free treatment, the hospital submits the bill to the government for reimbursement.
• If a vehicle hits a person and no one can trace that vehicle, the victim can receive financial assistance under the Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme.
• If any Good Samaritan helps a road accident victim during the golden hour, the government rewards that person with Rs. 25,000 under the Rah-Veer Scheme.

Scheme Benefits

• The scheme provides free cashless treatment up to Rs. 1,50,000 for each road accident victim.
• The injured person can receive medical care for a maximum of 7 days from the date of the accident.
• The scheme covers road accidents caused by any motor vehicle, whether the accident happens on a highway, city road, village road, or any public road.
• Doctors treat serious injuries, including trauma and polytrauma, under this package.
• Victims can take cashless treatment at more than 30,000 hospitals empanelled under Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana across India.
• The PM Rahat Scheme makes sure that road accident victims get immediate medical care without worrying about hospital bills or financial pressure.

Eligibility Requirements

• A road accident victim can get free cashless treatment under the PM Rahat Scheme only when they follow certain eligibility conditions :-
  • First, someone must inform the police about the accident within 24 hours.
  • Second, the injured person must get admitted to the hospital within 24 hours of the accident.
  • Third, the person must take treatment only at a hospital listed under Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
  • The scheme covers serious injuries such as trauma and polytrauma caused by road accidents.
  • The injured person can receive completely free cashless treatment for up to 7 days from the date of the accident.
  • The scheme allows both Indian citizens and foreign nationals to claim the benefit.

Required Documents

• To get free treatment under the PM Rahat Scheme, the injured person must show a basic identity proof at the hospital.
• The hospital may ask for the Aadhaar Card of the injured person.
• If Aadhaar is not available, the hospital can accept any valid government-issued photo ID.
• The hospital staff checks the identity document and confirms the details.
• After verification, the hospital staff completes all required formalities on their own.
• The injured person does not need to complete any complicated paperwork.
• No prior registration or advance approval is required to start treatment under this scheme.

Steps to Apply

• You do not need to fill out any form to get help under the PM Rahat Scheme.
• The government designed it in a simple way so people can get treatment quickly.
• If a road accident happens, do not waste time and take the injured person directly to a nearby hospital.
• The hospital will start treatment immediately without asking for money.
• PM RAHAT Scheme gives free cashless treatment.
• This means the injured person does not need to pay the hospital at that time.
• Both Indian citizens and foreign nationals can use this facility and the government does not restrict it to Indians only.
• The accident must involve a motor vehicle, like a car, bike, bus, or truck, and it must happen on a road.
• Take the injured person to a hospital that comes under Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
• Anyone can help the injured person, such as A passerby, a police officer, ambulance staff, or any responsible person, can take them to the hospital.
• After reaching the hospital, inform the police about the accident.
• Make sure the hospital admits the injured person within 24 hours of the accident.
• Once admission happens, hospital staff handle all the paperwork.
• They fill in the required details and complete the formal process.
• The injured person and family members do not need to run around for documents or approvals.
• After giving treatment, the hospital sends the bill to the government.
• The government pays the hospital directly from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund.
• In simple words, the workflow of the Prime Minister RAHAT Scheme is :- Accident happens → Go to the listed hospital → Get free treatment → Hospital handles paperwork → Government pays the bill.
