Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Tamil Nadu Vetri Payanam Thittam Scheme also known as "Magalir Payanam Scheme" is a flagship public transport welfare initiative of the Tamil Nadu Government that provides women and transgender persons with free travel in specified government-operated bus services across the state. The scheme aims to reduce daily transportation expenses, improve mobility, and make it easier for beneficiaries to access workplaces, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, markets, and other essential services. The Tamil Nadu Government launched the expanded Vetri Payanam facility on 2 October 2026, extending free travel to additional bus services in metropolitan and urban areas.

Under the Tamil Nadu Magalir Payanam Thittam Scheme, eligible women can travel free in the government buses covered under the existing Vidiyal Payanam Thittam. Initially, the free travel facility was available mainly in ordinary-fare government buses. The Tamil Nadu Government has now expanded the facility to include Express, LSS (Limited Stop Service), and Deluxe buses in metropolitan and urban areas. In mofussil and hill areas, the expanded facility will cover ordinary-fare government buses, including eligible inter-district services. Women can now avail these expanded benefits, as the facility became operational on 2 October 2026. The government has also announced that there will be no income limit and no restriction on the number of journeys.

Along with the expansion of the Vetri Payanam Scheme, the Tamil Nadu Government has also announced the Annapoorani Super Six Scheme to provide financial assistance towards cooking gas cylinders.

Besides the Tamil Nadu free bus travel scheme, the Tamil Nadu Government also provides the Free Bus Pass Scheme to eligible school and college students through separate transport welfare schemes. These initiatives help reduce commuting expenses and make education more accessible for students across the state.

The free bus travel programme for women is not a new initiative. It has been in operation since 2021, when the government launched it under the name Vidiyal Payanam Thittam. Since its launch, the scheme has benefited lakhs of women by helping them save on transportation costs and increasing their access to work, education, healthcare, and other day-to-day services. The Tamil Nadu Government has now expanded this existing facility under the name Vetri Payanam, and the expanded services became operational on 2 October 2026.
