Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Tripura Scheme for Incentive to Girl Child (TIGC) is a long-running welfare initiative of the Government of Tripura aimed at supporting the care, education, and overall welfare of girl children. The scheme was introduced through an official notification dated 12 June 2009 and came into effect from 1 June 2009. It is implemented by the Directorate of Social Welfare & Social Education, Government of Tripura.

Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive financial assistance of ₹500 per month for each girl child. The assistance is intended to provide families with regular financial support for the upbringing and education of their daughters and to ease some of the economic challenges associated with raising a girl child. The payment is preferably credited to the mother's bank or post office account and continues until the month in which the girl completes 15 years of age. A maximum of two girl children per mother can be covered under the scheme.

Eligibility is available to girl children born on or after 1 June 2009 belonging to families whose annual income is less than ₹1 lakh. This income criterion was introduced through a subsequent official modification of the Tripura Incentive to Girl Child Scheme guidelines. Girls who were already receiving assistance under the earlier BPL-based eligibility criteria are allowed to continue receiving the benefit, subject to the applicable scheme provisions.

The application process under Tripura Incentive to Girl Child Scheme is offline. Applicants can obtain the prescribed application form free of cost from the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of the concerned AMC, Nagar Panchayat, or Rural Development (RD) Block. After filling in the form and attaching the required documents, the completed application has to be submitted to the concerned CDPO office for further processing.

The scheme continues to be reflected in the official Gender Budget documents of the Government of Tripura and remains an important part of the state's welfare measures for girl children. Through regular financial assistance, the scheme seeks to support the well-being and education of daughters, encourage families to invest in their future, and contribute towards reducing gender disparity in Tripura.

Scheme Benefits

The benefits under the TIGC are designed to provide continuous financial support to eligible families for the upbringing of the girl child and are as follows:

  • Eligible families receive a monthly incentive of ₹500 for each qualifying girl child.
  • The payment is made preferably into the mother’s bank or post office account.
  • The incentive continues until the month the girl attains 15 years of age.
  • A maximum of two girl children per mother are covered under the scheme.

Eligibility Requirements

The eligibility criteria under the Tripura Incentive to Girl Child Scheme are straightforward and aim to target families that need financial support for their girl children. These are as under:

  • The girl child must have been born on or after 1 June 2009.
  • The family’s annual income should be less than ₹1 lakh (as revised by the official modification). Existing beneficiaries selected under the earlier BPL criterion continue to receive benefits.
  • A maximum of two girl children of a mother can be covered.

Required Documents

Applicants need to submit a few basic documents along with the application form. These typically include:

  • Income certificate
  • EPIC (voter ID) of the applicant
  • Birth certificate of the girl child issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths, AMC, Nagar Panchayat, Gram Panchayat or Village Committee in TTAADC areas.
  • Bank or post office account details of the mother.
