Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

Education plays a crucial role in breaking the cycle of poverty and creating opportunities for social and economic advancement. However, many students from Other Backward Classes (OBC) families continue to face financial challenges that can affect their educational journey. To support these students and encourage them to continue their studies, the Government of West Bengal launched the Medhashree - Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme.

Under this scheme, eligible OBC students studying in Classes 5 to 8 in Government, Government Sponsored, and Government Aided Schools across West Bengal receive an annual scholarship of ₹800 per beneficiary. The scheme is fully funded by the State Government and aims to provide financial assistance to students from families with an annual income of up to ₹2.5 lakh.

The Medhashree Scholarship has been introduced to strengthen educational participation among OBC communities, reduce financial barriers to schooling, and promote equal access to educational opportunities. By providing direct financial support at the pre-matric level, the scheme encourages students to remain enrolled in school and continue their academic progress.

The support provided under Medhashree does not end at the upper primary level. After completing Class VIII, eligible students can continue receiving educational assistance through the West Bengal Sikshashree Scheme, which is designed for OBC students studying in higher classes. Together, Medhashree and Sikshashree create a continuous framework of educational support, ensuring that deserving students receive financial assistance throughout different stages of their school education.

Through these schemes, the Government of West Bengal aims to promote educational inclusion, improve learning opportunities, and encourage students from economically weaker OBC families to pursue their studies without financial difficulties. This long-term support plays an important role in helping students build a stronger academic foundation and achieve their future educational goals.

Scheme Benefits

• The scheme provides financial assistance to eligible OBC students studying in Classes V to VIII in Government, Government Sponsored, and Government Aided Schools of West Bengal.
• Eligible students receive a scholarship of ₹800 per annum.
• Once awarded, the scholarship may continue up to Class VIII, subject to fulfillment of eligibility conditions and promotion to the next class.
• The scheme encourages students from OBC communities to remain enrolled in school and continue their studies.

Note: Students receiving any other pre-matric scholarship or similar government financial assistance are not eligible under the Medhashree Scheme.

Eligibility Requirements

• The applicant must be a domicile of West Bengal.
• The applicant must belong to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category recognized by the Backward Classes Welfare Department.
• The student must be studying as a regular full-time student in a recognized institution.
• The student must be studying in Class V, VI, VII, or VIII.
• Only day scholars studying in West Bengal are eligible.
• The annual family income of the student should not exceed ₹2.50 lakh.
• The applicant must possess a valid bank account with core banking facility.
• The applicant should not be receiving any other pre-matric scholarship or similar government financial assistance.
• Students studying outside West Bengal are not eligible.

Note: If a student repeats a class, scholarship for that class will not be granted again.

Steps to Apply

• Begin your scholarship application journey by visiting the official OASIS Scholarship Portal of the Government of West Bengal, where all scholarship-related services are available online.

• On the homepage, click on the "Student's Registration" option.

• Select the district where your school or educational institution is located.

• Read the instructions carefully and click on "I Agree" to proceed.

• Enter the required details, such as your Caste Certificate Number, Certificate Issuing Date, and the captcha code displayed on the screen.
• Click on "Submit" to complete the registration process.
• After registration, log in to your account using the generated credentials.
• Fill in the scholarship application form with your personal, academic, and bank account details.
• Upload the required documents in the prescribed format.
• Review all the information carefully and submit the application form.
• Download and save the acknowledgement receipt for future reference.

OASIS Scholarship Renewal Process

Students who have already received the scholarship in the previous academic year must renew their application to continue receiving benefits. The renewal process can be completed by following these steps:

• On the official OASIS Scholarship Portal.

• Under the Student's Corner section, click on "Renew Scholarship".
• Select the district where your institution is located.

• Log in using your Application ID/User ID and Password.
• Choose the relevant academic year and enter the captcha code.
• Verify the details already available in the system and update any information if required.
• Enter your current academic details.
• Click on "Renew and Lock Application".
• Finally, click on "Submit" to complete the renewal process.

How to Check Application Status

Students can easily track the status of their scholarship application online through the OASIS portal by following these steps:

• Again on the official OASIS Scholarship Portal.

• Click on "Track an Application" on the homepage.
• Select the district where your institution is located.
• Enter the required details, such as your application information and captcha code.

• Click on "Check Status" to view the current status of your scholarship application.

Important Terms and Conditions

• Students receiving any other Pre-Matric Scholarship or similar financial assistance from another Government scheme are not eligible under Medhashree.
• If a student receives another scholarship of a similar nature along with Medhashree, the scholarship amount received under Medhashree may have to be refunded.
• Scholarship for a particular class is available only once.
• If a student repeats a class, scholarship will not be granted again for the same class.
• However, if the student is promoted to the next class, the scholarship can continue subject to eligibility conditions.
• Once awarded, the scholarship may continue up to Class VIII, provided all eligibility requirements are fulfilled.
