Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

Paschim Banga Awas is the new name of West Bengal's rural housing assistance programme, which was known as Banglar Bari for the past two years. The state government announced the name change on 6 August 2026 at Nabanna in Kolkata while releasing the scheme's second instalment. For existing Banglar Bari beneficiaries, the important point is that the housing programme has not been discontinued or replaced. The government has continued the scheme under its new name after carrying out a fresh verification of beneficiaries before releasing the second payment.

The Paschim Banga Awas Yojana continues to provide financial assistance to rural families living in kutcha, dilapidated or makeshift houses so they can construct a pucca house. The Panchayat & Rural Development Department, Government of West Bengal, implements the programme with state funds. Eligible beneficiaries receive ₹1.20 lakh in plain areas, while beneficiaries in hilly and difficult-terrain areas can receive ₹1.30 lakh. The assistance is released in instalments through the prescribed payment process instead of being paid as a single lump sum.

Paschim Banga Awas does not currently have an open online application window where anyone can simply submit a fresh application. Instead, the government identifies potential beneficiaries through a household survey conducted by the block and district administration. A provisional beneficiary list is then published Gram Panchayat-wise on the concerned district's official website. If a household finds that its name has been left out or has been included incorrectly, it can object with the concerned Block Development Officer (BDO) or Zilla Parishad office during the prescribed objection period.

The scheme is currently in an active payment phase. On 6 August 2026, the West Bengal Government transferred the second instalment of more than ₹6,122 crore to over 10.20 lakh families through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Before this payment, Block Development Officers and Sub-Divisional Officers carried out fresh verification of beneficiaries. The screening found that some households from the earlier beneficiary list had either not reached the required stage of house construction or did not meet the applicable eligibility conditions. Around 8 lakh households remain pending for payment because their construction status or eligibility is still under review.

Eligibility Requirements

• The beneficiary must belong to an eligible rural household identified through the West Bengal Government's prescribed household survey and beneficiary-selection process.
• The household should require housing assistance to construct a pucca house.
• The household must pass the eligibility verification conducted by the concerned government authorities.
• The beneficiary's name must appear in the prescribed provisional or final beneficiary list after the survey and verification process.
• Households whose eligibility is not established during verification may be placed in an ineligible, inactive or hold category, as applicable.

Required Documents

The government has not published a fixed document checklist for Paschim Banga Awas. Since beneficiaries are identified through the government survey and verification process, applicants may need to provide identity, address, bank account, housing and other supporting documents if requested by the concerned Gram Panchayat or Block Development Office.

How to avail benefits

• Eligible rural families are identified through the beneficiary selection process followed by the West Bengal Government.
• The concerned local authority verifies the beneficiary's eligibility and housing condition.
• The selected beneficiary's details are entered and verified in the official scheme records.
• After approval, the first instalment of the housing assistance is transferred to the beneficiary's registered bank or post-office account.
• The beneficiary must construct the house according to the prescribed scheme guidelines and complete the required construction stages.
• Officials verify the progress and fulfilment of the prescribed conditions before releasing the subsequent instalment.
• The remaining assistance is transferred to the beneficiary's bank or post-office account after the required verification.

How to Check Your Name in the Beneficiary List (Online)

1. Visit your district's official government website (for example, the sites of Cooch Behar, Hooghly, Uttar Dinajpur, or your own district).
2. Look for the "Paschim Banga Awas (previously known as Banglar Bari" notice section.
3. Open the latest "GP-wise Provisional List" or "Beneficiary List" notice published for your block.
4. Download the relevant PDF and search for your name, guardian's name, or application/survey ID.
5. Note your status as shown on the list: eligible, ineligible, or inactive.

How to Raise an Objection or Claim (Offline)

1. Collect your supporting documents (see the Required Documents section above).
2. Visit your local Block Development Officer (BDO) office, or the Zilla Parishad office of your district.
3. Submit a written claim or objection regarding your eligibility status within the window mentioned in the district's provisional-list notice.
4. Retain an acknowledgement or receipt of your submission for future reference.
5. Follow up with the BDO office or your Gram Panchayat for updates on your final status and instalment disbursal.

If you are a first-time household hoping to get included in a future survey round, the most reliable step is to contact your Gram Panchayat member or BDO office directly, since there is no self-service registration portal for this scheme at present.
