Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Bihar Rajya Alpsankhyak Awasiya Vidyalaya Yojana (Bihar State Minority Residential School Scheme) is a flagship initiative of the Minority Welfare Department, Government of Bihar, launched in the financial year 2018-19. Its core aim is to provide quality residential education to meritorious students belonging to notified minority communities- Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis- helping them develop mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally while bringing them into the educational mainstream.

Under this scheme, free education is offered from Class 9 to Class 12 in dedicated residential schools. Students receive not just classroom learning but also secure hostel accommodation, free meals, clothing, books, and medical facilities. The schools follow a co-education model based on the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) syllabus, with instruction available in Hindi or English. At least one such school is planned for every district in the state. Currently, schools are operational in Darbhanga and Kishanganj. Four additional schools in Jamui, Nalanda, Kaimur, and Muzaffarpur have been completed, with academic activities set to begin from mid-August 2026, expanding access significantly.

Admission is primarily for Classes 9 and 11 through an online application process followed by a competitive entrance examination. Selection is strictly merit-based. Key eligibility highlights include Bihar residency, membership in a notified minority community, age limits (maximum 16 years for Class 9 and 18 years for Class 11), and an annual family income not exceeding ₹6 lakh. Seats are reserved with 50% for girls and 75% for rural students in both categories. The Alpsankhyak Awasiya Vidyalaya scheme continues to evolve with phased admissions for the 2026-27 session and ongoing infrastructure expansion across multiple districts.

This initiative goes beyond free schooling- it equips minority students with the tools for holistic growth and better future opportunities in a supportive residential environment.
