Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview
The Jammu and Kashmir Ladli Beti Scheme is a financial assistance scheme of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir designed to provide long-term financial support to eligible girl children. The scheme aims to reduce the financial burden on families and support the girl child's financial security in the future. It applies to eligible girl children born on or after 01-04-2015, subject to the prescribed eligibility and income conditions. The Social Welfare Department runs the scheme, while J&K Bank holds and operates the beneficiary accounts.
Under the scheme, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir contributes ₹1,000 every month to the Ladli Beti account during the first phase. The amount is deposited through a 14-year Recurring Deposit (RD). After the RD phase is completed, the account moves to a 7-year Cumulative Term Deposit (CCR), making the total deposit tenure 21 years. The maturity benefit is paid to the girl child's savings bank account after the applicable maturity condition is fulfilled.
To receive the benefit, the girl child must meet the prescribed conditions, including the birth-date requirement and family income limit. The scheme is currently implemented in selected districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Applicants must also fulfil the applicable district and departmental requirements while submitting their applications.
Eligible applicants can apply for the Jammu and Kashmir Ladli Beti Scheme through the Jammu and Kashmir Jansugam Portal. The application is verified by the concerned authorities before approval and processing of the beneficiary account. Applicants should keep the required birth, domicile, income, identity and bank-related documents ready while applying.
The Government of Jammu and Kashmir also runs the Marriage Assistance Scheme through the Social Welfare Department. Eligible beneficiaries can use the scheme to seek government assistance for marriage-related needs.
Scheme Benefits
Jammu and Kashmir Ladli Beti Scheme provides long-term financial support to eligible girl children through a two-phase deposit structure. The Government of Jammu and Kashmir makes a monthly contribution during the first phase, after which the account continues as a cumulative term deposit.
- J&K Government contributes ₹1,000 per month to the Ladli Beti account during the first phase.
- The first phase operates as a Recurring Deposit (RD) for 14 years.
- After completion of the 14-year RD phase, the account moves to a 7-year Cumulative Term Deposit (CCR).
- The scheme has a total deposit tenure of 21 years.
- The beneficiary receives the maturity benefit after fulfilling the prescribed maturity conditions.
- The maturity amount, along with applicable interest, is credited to the savings bank account of the girl child.
- No partial withdrawal or foreclosure is allowed during the scheme period.
- No other contribution apart from the Government's prescribed monthly ₹1,000 contribution is permitted in the Phase I RD account.
How the Ladli Beti Scheme Amount Grows in Two Phases
The Ladli Beti Scheme is a hybrid deposit plan, which simply means the savings move through two stages before the girl child can claim the money. The table below explains both phases in plain terms.
| Phase | How Long | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Phase I- Recurring Deposit | 14 years |
|
| Phase II- Cumulative Term Deposit (CCR) | 7 years |
|
The account moves from Phase I to Phase II on its own once the recurring deposit matures, so parents do not need to apply again or visit the bank to convert it.
When the maturity amount becomes payable depends on three conditions, and the money is released on whichever of them comes last:
- The girl child completes 21 years of age.
- 21 years are completed from the date of the first instalment.
- 85 months are completed from the date of the last instalment.
