Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Nagaland State Technical Scholarship is a state government scholarship that the Government of Nagaland awards to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students of the state who study technical courses. The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Nagaland, Kohima, implements the scheme and manages applications through the Nagaland Common Scholarship Portal. Officially, the scheme is titled the "State Technical Scholarship for ST students of the state of Nagaland", and it covers students enrolled in Diploma, Degree, and Master's level engineering courses.

The government launched this scholarship to make sure that ST students of Nagaland do not drop out of technical education because of the cost of study material. The main objective of the State Technical Scholarship is to provide financial support to ST students in the form of a book grant, so that students pursuing technical courses in institutions recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) can manage their academic expenses with less financial pressure. The scheme also covers institutions approved by the Council of Architecture (COA).

Under the State Technical Scholarship Scheme, the department selects students on the basis of merit in their last qualifying examination and the supporting documents they upload. Selected students receive the scholarship through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) on an annual basis, directly in their own Aadhaar-seeded bank account.

The scholarship remains available for up to 3 years for Diploma, 4 years for BE/B.Tech and 2 years for ME/M.Tech students, provided the student gets promoted to the next class every year and applies for renewal through the state portal. Students whose annual family income does not exceed ₹8 lakh and who do not receive any other Central, State or AICTE-sponsored scholarship can apply.

Like the Nagaland State Technical Scholarship Scheme, the Central Government also offers scholarships for students pursuing Degree, diploma, and technical courses. The NEC Merit Scholarship Scheme supports eligible students from the North Eastern Region, the AICTE Swanath Scholarship Scheme assists eligible students facing specific hardships, and the AICTE YASHASVI Scholarship Scheme supports students pursuing technical diploma and degree courses. Interested students can check the details of these schemes here.

Verification and Approval

The Directorate verifies the online application, uploaded documents, and hard copy, and then prepares the merit-based selection. It considers only verified applications for the award and releases the scholarship to selected students through DBT. The concerned authority has not yet released the timeline for verification and results officially.

DBT and Payment Details

The department pays the scholarship through DBT on an annual basis, so students must keep their bank details in order before applying.

  • The bank account must belong to the applicant. For a joint account, the applicant's name must appear on the front page of the passbook.
  • The bank account must be 100% Aadhaar-seeded, as the scheme now uses the Aadhaar Payment Bridge (APB) system.
  • The Department of Technical Education is not liable for non-receipt of the scholarship due to a wrong or inactive bank account number or details.

The official guidelines also lay down the following conditions that every applicant must follow.

  • The department invites applications only once a year through the state scholarship portal.
  • The department summarily rejects incomplete applications.
  • Correction or rectification after submission is not possible.
