Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

Growing old should not mean growing dependent. In a state as vast and densely populated as Uttar Pradesh, lakhs of elderly citizens live without a regular source of income after a lifetime of hard work as farmers, labourers, or in informal jobs. For these senior citizens belonging to economically weaker sections, a modest monthly amount that arrives directly in their own bank account can mean the difference between constantly asking family for every expense and retaining dignity and independence. This is the vision behind the Uttar Pradesh Old Age Pension Scheme (Vridhavastha Pension Yojana), which provides a reliable financial safety net to people aged 60 years and above so that old age does not become a period of helplessness and dependence.

The Directorate of Social Welfare, Government of Uttar Pradesh, administers the scheme. The state's unified Integrated Social Pension Portal (SSPY), available at sspy-up.gov.in, handles all applications, verifications, and payments. This same portal also manages the Destitute Women (Widow) Pension and the Divyang (Disability) Pension, making it a single-window system for social security pensions in the state.

Over the years, the UP Old Age Pension Scheme has grown into one of the largest social security programmes of its kind in India. In 2017, around 37.5 lakh elderly citizens were receiving the pension. Through continuous expansion drives, the coverage has nearly doubled. In the financial year 2025-26, the state set an ambitious target of covering approximately 67.50 lakh senior citizens under the scheme. This rapid expansion reflects the government's focus on strengthening social security for the elderly population of Uttar Pradesh.

The pension amount is transferred directly into the beneficiary's Aadhaar-linked bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. This ensures that the money reaches the intended person without intermediaries, delays, or leakage. As long as the beneficiary continues to meet the eligibility conditions and completes the required periodic verification (such as eKYC or Aadhaar authentication), the support continues lifelong.

In short, the Uttar Pradesh Old Age Pension Scheme is more than just a monthly payment - it is a structured effort to protect the dignity and financial security of the state's senior citizens at a stage of life when they need it the most. The same Integrated Social Pension Portal (SSPY) also runs the Widow (Destitute Women) Pension Scheme and the Divyang Pension Yojana, creating a unified social security system for the elderly, widows, and persons with disabilities in Uttar Pradesh.

Scheme Benefits

The financial support and payment process that eligible senior citizens receive under the Old Age Pension Scheme are given below:

  • Under the scheme, a monthly pension of ₹1,000 is paid directly into the bank account of the beneficiary.
  • The money is transferred by Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to the applicant's own Aadhaar-linked account.
  • Payments are typically released quarterly (in instalments across the financial year), but the entitlement is calculated on a per-month basis.
  • The pension is a lifelong support as long as the beneficiary continues to meet the eligibility conditions and completes the periodic verification (such as eKYC / Aadhaar authentication) when required.
