Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Vetri Magalir Goat Rearing Scheme is a new livestock-based livelihood support scheme announced by the Tamil Nadu Government in the 2026–27 Revised Budget. The scheme aims to support vulnerable women and other disadvantaged groups living in rural areas by providing livestock for goat or sheep rearing. Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive five goats or sheep with 100% subsidy. The government has proposed to cover around 30,000 beneficiaries and has allocated ₹110 crore for the scheme in the Revised Budget Estimates 2026–27.

The Vetri Magalir Goat Rearing Scheme focuses on destitute widows, deserted women, transgender persons and persons with disabilities living in rural areas. By providing five goats or sheep with 100% subsidy, the scheme aims to create a livelihood opportunity through goat and sheep rearing. The Budget announcement, however, does not yet specify detailed conditions such as age limit, income limit, selection criteria, application dates or the exact implementation procedure.

At present, the Vetri Magalir Goat Rearing Scheme or called as Vetri Magalir Aadu Valarpu Thittam is only a Budget announcement and has not yet been implemented. Eligible beneficiaries cannot submit applications at this stage. The Tamil Nadu Government is yet to issue detailed scheme guidelines and the application procedure. Once the necessary approvals, including Cabinet approval, are completed, the concerned department is expected to notify the eligibility conditions, required documents, beneficiary selection process and application method.

The Tamil Nadu Government has also announced other welfare initiatives aimed at supporting women and families, including Vetri Payanam Thittam, which expands free public transport support for women and transgender persons; Annapoorani Super Six Scheme, which provides three free gas cylinders; and Annan Seer Thittam, a proposed assistance programme for eligible families.
