Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Delhi Government has launched the "Aftercare Scheme for Young Persons" to provide long-term support to young people who leave institutional care after turning 18 years old. The scheme was announced on the occasion of Mother's Day, i.e. on 10th May 2026, to ensure that youth coming out of Child Care Institutions do not struggle due to lack of family support, financial resources or career guidance.

Many young persons living in Child Care Institutions face major challenges after completing 18 years of age because they have to leave institutional care and start living independently. In many cases, these youth struggle to continue higher education, arrange accommodation, find employment, manage finances and deal with emotional stress. To address these issues, the Delhi Government introduced this aftercare support initiative.

Under the Delhi After Care scheme, around 150 to 200 young persons every year will receive continuous support for education, skill development, vocational training, internships, employment opportunities, counselling and career guidance. The government aims to help beneficiaries build stable careers and become self-dependent members of society.

The scheme also focuses on providing emotional and social support during the transition period from institutional care to independent living. Beneficiaries may receive mentoring support, counselling services and emergency assistance whenever required. According to the information shared by the Delhi Government, personalised care plans will be prepared based on the needs and goals of each beneficiary.

To ensure proper monitoring and implementation, the government plans to form State Level and District Level Aftercare Committees. These committees will help supervise beneficiary support, monitor progress and coordinate services under the scheme.

The Delhi Government has allocated around 3.5 crore rupees for the financial year 2026-27 for the implementation of the Aftercare Scheme for Young Persons. Through this scheme, the Delhi Government has stated that no young person should lose opportunities due to a lack of support after leaving institutional care.
