Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Gujarat Uniform Assistance Scheme is a state government benefit that pays for school uniforms of students from the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC), Economically Backward Classes (EBC), Minority and Nomadic Tribes / De-notified Tribes (NT/DNT) categories studying in primary classes. The state runs the benefit through three separate departments, and each department implements the scheme for its respective category of students. The common objective across all three departments is to reduce the financial burden of purchasing school uniforms and encourage regular attendance among children from these communities.

Students of the SC, ST, SEBC, EBC, Minority and NT/DNT categories all receive ₹900 for three pairs of uniforms per annum. SC students receive this assistance under scheme number BCK-16, which the Social Justice and Empowerment Department implements through the Directorate of Scheduled Caste Welfare. SEBC, EBC, Minority and NT/DNT students receive the same ₹900 assistance through the Director, Developing Castes Welfare. ST students also receive ₹900 per annum for three pairs of uniform under the scheme named 'Assistance for Uniform', which is run by the Tribal Development Department. This ST scheme has been in operation since 1973 and is implemented across all districts of Gujarat, ensuring that tribal students have been covered under uniform support for more than five decades.

All three schemes cover students of Class 1 to Class 8 (Standard I to VIII) and apply no income limit. This means the family income of the student never becomes a barrier to receiving the benefit. Because there is no income ceiling, the scheme remains one of the most accessible forms of educational assistance at the primary level in Gujarat. Parents do not need to arrange an income certificate or fulfil any income-related condition to claim the assistance for their children. 

The government has kept the application process for Gujarat Uniform Assistance Scheme simple and uniform for parents across all categories. Students do not apply on their own and do not need to visit any government office. The school principal completes the entire online work on behalf of the student through the Digital Gujarat portal using a pre-defined application form. 

After the school submits the data, the concerned district office - District Deputy Director (Scheduled Caste Welfare) for SC students, the District Developing Castes Welfare Office for SEBC/EBC/Minority/NT-DNT students, and the Tribal Development Department's district office for ST students - processes the applications and releases the assistance. Parents of SC, ST, SEBC, EBC, Minority and NT/DNT students should therefore approach their school at the beginning of the academic session so that the school can complete the required formalities on time.

In addition to the Uniform Assistance Scheme, the Directorate of Scheduled Caste Welfare, Government of Gujarat, also implements the Saraswati Sadhana Yojana for Scheduled Caste school girls. Under this scheme, free bicycles are provided to SC girls studying in Standard 9 to help them continue their education at the secondary level without facing transportation difficulties.

Scheme Benefits

All the departments provide fixed financial assistance meant specifically for school uniforms, and the officially published benefits appear below.

Eligibility Requirements

• The student must belong to the SC, ST, SEBC, EBC, Minority, and NT/DNTcategory.

• No income limit applies to the student's family under either scheme.

Parents or guardians need to keep the following documents ready:

• Caste certificate of the student issued by the competent authority
• School identity card or current year admission proof
• Aadhaar card
• Residence Proof
• Bank account details of the student or parent (preferably Aadhaar-linked)
• Passport-size photograph
• Any other document asked by the school or district office

Steps to Apply

This scheme does not require the parent or the student to apply directly. The school carries out the online work, so the process moves in the following order.

Through the School Principal (Official Route)

The official page states the route: applications go through school principals on the Digital Gujarat portal, using a pre-defined application form. So the sequence below sets out the practical order parents should follow at the school.

• Contact the class teacher or the school office at the beginning of the academic session.
• Inform the school that your child belongs to the SC / ST / SEBC / EBC / Minority / NT-DNT category and is eligible for the Uniform Assistance Scheme.
• Submit the papers demanded by the school office for verification.
• Fill and sign the pre-defined application form supplied by the school.
• The school principal enters and submits the student data online on the Digital Gujarat portal.
• The District Deputy Director (SCW) office processes the applications received from schools.
• Follow up with the school office for the status of the assistance.

Digital Gujarat Portal

Many parents search for a direct online form for this scheme, so the correct position needs a clear answer. The department has fixed Digital Gujarat as the official portal for this scheme, but the online work runs through the school principal's login, not through an individual student login. Parents should therefore approach the school instead of attempting a personal application.
