Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview
The Accident Assistance Scheme is provided by the Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board to financially support registered construction workers in case of accidents. This scheme covers situations where a worker suffers death or permanent disability (total or partial) due to a sudden and unexpected accident without any criminal intent.
Under this scheme, financial assistance is given based on the severity of the accident. In case of death, the nominee can receive up to ₹8,00,000 if the accident happens during work, and around ₹5,00,000 if it happens outside work. For permanent total disability, ₹2,00,000 is given, and for partial disability, up to ₹1,00,000 is provided depending on the percentage of disability.
To be eligible, the worker must be registered with the Welfare Board and should have worked at least 90 days in construction. The accident can happen during work or even outside work, but it should not be due to reasons like self-harm, alcohol/drug influence, or illegal activities.
If the accident happens during employment, the employer also provides compensation under the Employee's Compensation Act, 1923, in addition to the Board's assistance.
The application must be submitted within one year of the accident along with required documents like FIR, medical reports, and employer certificate. After verification by officials, the amount is approved and paid partly through bank transfer and partly as a fixed deposit for the worker or nominee.
Apart from accident assistance, registered construction workers and their families may also benefit from other welfare schemes such as the Karnataka Funeral Expense and Ex-Gratia Assistance Scheme and the Karnataka Pension Scheme for Construction Workers, which provide additional financial support during emergencies and old age.
