Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Haryana State Merit Scholarship to Undergraduate Girl Students is a merit-based scholarship of the Government of Haryana for girls who score well in Class 12 and take admission in a government college for a general degree course. The Department of Higher Education, Haryana, runs the scheme, and students apply for it online through the state's centralised Har-Chhatravratti Scholarship Portal. Its objective is to encourage meritorious girls to pursue higher education by rewarding academic performance and motivating them to join government college graduation courses while maintaining good results.

The Haryana government started this scholarship in the financial year 2005–06 to support bright girl students who want to continue their studies after Class 12. The objective of the scheme is to encourage meritorious girls to pursue higher education by rewarding their academic performance with yearly financial support. Through this scholarship, the government motivates girls to join graduation courses in government colleges and to keep up good results throughout their degree.

Under the State Merit Scholarship to Undergraduate Girl Students, the government gives a scholarship of ₹3,000 per student per year. Each government college can select 10 girl students for fresh awards every year, and the scholarship continues for three years. The college renews it every year if the student secures at least 55% marks in the qualifying examination. A girl who passes Class 12 with at least 60% marks and studies a general degree course in a government college can apply. The scheme has no family income limit, so selection depends only on merit.

The Head of the Institution recommends eligible students on merit and forwards their applications with the complete documents. When two or more students have equal marks, the department works out the percentage up to three decimal places and gives priority to the younger student. From the 2021–22 session onwards, the department releases the scholarship through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) after approval from the higher authority. Students of correspondence courses and open universities cannot apply, and a scholarship holder cannot take any other scholarship or stipend at the same time.

The Higher Education Department of Haryana is also running the Haryana State Meritorious Incentives Scheme for meritorious students, just like the State Merit Scholarship to Undergraduate Girls Students. This scheme provides financial incentives to top-ranking students of government colleges (1st, 2nd, or 3rd position in university examinations) as well as Haryana domicile students who top the state in CBSE Class 10th and 12th examinations, to support their higher education. You can check the complete details here.
