Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

The Uttar Pradesh Mukhyamantri Krishak Chhatravritti Yojana is a merit-based scholarship scheme that the Uttar Pradesh State Agricultural Produce Mandi Parishad (UP Mandi Parishad) runs for the sons and daughters of farmers and agricultural labourers, as well as for those fully dependent on them. The scheme draws its funding from the Uttar Pradesh Krishi Utpadan Mandi Adhiniyam, which allows the Mandi Parishad to spend up to 2% of its annual income on financial assistance to recognised educational institutions. Through this provision, the state supports students who pursue higher agricultural education at recognised agricultural universities, agricultural institutes and agricultural colleges of Uttar Pradesh.

Its core objective is to give scholarships through the Mandi Parishad to students studying Agriculture and Home Science at the graduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) levels in government and government-aided agricultural universities, institutes and colleges of Uttar Pradesh. The Krishak Chhatravritti Scheme also covers allied agricultural disciplines such as horticulture, forestry and animal husbandry, so that meritorious children from farming families can continue higher studies without financial pressure.

The scheme works entirely on merit. A student must be a resident of Uttar Pradesh and must have scored at least 70% marks in Intermediate from the UP Board (or 85% from any other board) for UG courses, and at least 70% marks in graduation for PG courses. The concerned university or college selects eligible students in descending order of merit, a selection committee with Mandi Parishad officers approves the list, and the Divisional Deputy Director (Administration/Marketing) of the Mandi Parishad gives the final sanction. After that, the Mandi Parishad headquarters releases the scholarship amount.

The UP Krishak Scholarship also has a clear renewal rule: a student continues to receive the scholarship in later years only after passing the previous year's examination, and a student who fails in any year becomes ineligible for the rest of the course. Under the Scholarship Scheme, students can apply offline through their own educational institution.

Besides the Uttar Pradesh Mukhyamantri Krishak Chhatravritti Yojana, the UP government also runs the Mukhyamantri Abhyudaya Yojana, offering free coaching for exams like UPSC, JEE, NEET, and NDA, and the Mukhyamantri Bal Seva Yojana, which offers monthly financial assistance of ₹2,500 (or up to ₹4,000 in the COVID category) to orphaned and vulnerable children for their education and support. You can check the complete details of these schemes here.

Latest Update:

Recently, the Uttar Pradesh government has made two major changes. First, it has raised the scholarship from ₹3,000 per month to ₹5,000 per month, which takes the annual assistance from ₹36,000 to ₹60,000 per student - an extra ₹24,000 every year. Second, it has doubled the number of scholarship seats from 1,410 to 2,820. Each agricultural university or institute can now award scholarships to 90 students instead of 45, and each agricultural college can now support 30 students instead of 15. The scheme currently applies to 11 agricultural universities and institutes and 61 agricultural colleges in the state.
