Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

• The year 2026 has started with positive news for male students in Assam.
• On 01 January 2026, Assam Chief Minister Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a major welfare scheme for boys studying in the state.
• The government has named this initiative "Babu Asoni," also known as the "Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Babu Scheme".
• Through this scheme, the Assam Government aims to motivate boys to continue and complete their higher education.
• At present, the government already supports girl students through the Mukhyamantri Nijut Moina Scheme, which provides monthly financial assistance for them.
• To maintain balance and extend similar support, the government decided to introduce a dedicated financial assistance scheme for boys as well.
• Under the Babu Asoni Scheme, eligible students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses within Assam will receive monthly scholarship support.
• The government will provide Rs. 1,000 per month to those students who are in their first year of an undergraduate course.
• This financial support will be provided to eligible students for 10 months only in which they receive Rs. 10,000/- in their every academic year.
• Male UG students currently a beneficiaries of CM Jibon Prerana Asoni remain ineligible for financial aid through Babu Asoni.
• Students enrolled in the first year of their postgraduate courses will receive Rs. 2,000 per month as financial assistance.
• PG Students will receive a total of Rs. 20,000/- per year financial assistance for every academic year.
• Post Graduate Students who already availed the benefit of Banikanta Kakati Merit Award Asoni
• Students whose annual family income exceeds Rs. 4 lakh will not qualify for benefits under this scheme.
• Eligible Students can collect the Assam Government's Babu Asoni Application Form from their respective college administration offices.
• Selected students will begin receiving their financial support under the Babu Asoni Scheme from February 1, 2026.

Scheme Benefits

• The Assam Government will offer monthly financial assistance to male students under this scheme.
• Students enrolled in first-year undergraduate courses will receive Rs. 1,000 per month for 10 months.
• This means UG Course Students will receive Rs. 10,000/- assistance in per academic year.
• Students of first-year postgraduate courses will get Rs. 2,000 per month for 10 months.
• This means PG Course Students will receive Rs. 20,000/- assistance in per academic year.
• The government will transfer the assistance amount directly to the student's bank account.

Eligibility Requirements

• Only permanent residents of Assam can apply for this scheme.
• The Assam Government will provide monthly financial assistance exclusively to male students.
• Applicants must currently be in the 1st year of an undergraduate or postgraduate regular course within Assam.
• Enrollment of students should be ina  Government or Provincialised Education Institute.
• The student's annual family income must not exceed Rs. 4 lakh.
• Undergraduate students who already enjoy benefits from the Chief Minister Jibon Prerana Scheme cannot submit an application.
• Postgraduate students who currently receive the Banikanta Kakati Merit Award Scheme also fail to meet the eligibility requirements for this program.
• Married male students do not qualify to claim the financial incentive under this specific scheme.

Steps to Apply

• The Assam Government has released the official guidelines and application forms for the Babu Asoni.
• Students in Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs should use the specific application forms provided for their respective levels:

• Colleges provide these application forms to UG and PG students entirely free of charge.
• Principals or Registrars will formally introduce the scheme within their institutions and hand out the forms to all eligible applicants.
• Every head of an educational institution must designate one or two Nodal Teachers to manage the scheme's rollout effectively.
• Eligible students should pick up the Babu Asoni Form from their college office and complete it with accurate details.
• The application form asks for the following specific information :-
  • Personal Details.
  • Academic Records.
  • Bank Account Details.
• Applicants must attach all the required supporting documents to their finished form and hand it over to the college administration.
• The Principal or Registrar will gather the submitted forms and confirm the accuracy of the information provided by the students.
• Once the college verifies the data, they will upload the student information onto the SAMARTH Portal for digital processing.
• The institution must confirm that every student provides a legitimate parent income certificate or ration card before uploading it to the portal.
• Higher Education Department officials from the Assam Government will conduct a final review of the data that colleges submit.
• Qualified students will receive a monthly scholarship for a duration of ten months under this financial assistance program.
• Students who need help or have questions regarding the Babu Aasoni should reach out to their college's appointed Nodal Officer.
